Galway Bay fm newsroom – Gardai are to implement traffic plans in Oranmore today as huge crowds are expected for the funeral of Galway hurling icon Tony Keady.

There were severe traffic delays and lengthy queues yesterday as up to 15 thousand people flocked to the village to attend the reposal of the hurling legend.

Among the mourners were hurlers and GAA players from all over Ireland – including the Tipperary team which battled Galway for the all-Ireland crown in the 1980s.

Oranmore almost came to a standstill yesterday as the resposal of Tony Keady, long regarded as one of the finest hurlers to ever wear the maroon jersey, got underway.

The village was awash with county flags as people began queuing from mid-day and continued to arrive in a seemingly endless stream to pay their respects to the hurling legend.

Manager Michael ‘Babs’ Keating and his Tipperary squad, who battled Tony so fiercely in the all-Ireland rivalries of the 1980s, travelled to Oranmore pay their respects to the iconic hurler.

Also in attendance were dozens of Tony’s former Galway and Killimordaly teammates – as well as the Galway senior and minor squads, who privately paid their respects before members of the public arrived.

The Killimordaly native passed away at UHG on Wednesday night following a sudden illness.

The 53 year old lived at Frenchfort just several kilometers outside the village and worked as a caretaker at Calasanctius College, where he was heavily involved in coaching.

He’s survived by his wife Margaret and their four children.

The double All-Ireland winner and All Star played hurling with his local club Killimordaly, and was a member of the Galway senior inter-county team in the 1980s and 1990s.

He has been remembered in recent days as a true legend of Galway hurling for his dominance of the half-back line and for his larger than life personality.

Requiem Mass will take place this afternoon at 2, after which Tony will be laid to rest in Renville Cemetery.

Heavy traffic and huge crowds are again expected today, and Gardai and GAA stewards will be on-site to direct traffic.

The public are asked to avoid the Maree Road to Renville and Renville Park areas between 3-5pm today to facilitate the Funeral.

The Keady family has requested that instead of flowers, donations can be made to the Make a Wish Foundation.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Concerned parents are to hold a public meeting in Inverin tomorrow to discuss the running of childcare services at Ionad Tacaiochta Teaghlaigh.

Senator Trevor O’ Clochartaigh says they’re worried about recent staffing changes, child safety and the implementation of the Irish language in the preschool.

He says parents feel a public meeting is the best option due to what’s described as ongoing difficulties in attempting to engage with management.

The Sinn Fein Senator claims parents are particularly concerned about the challenge of maintaining the proper legal ratio of staff to children.

The public meeting will take place at An Poitin Stil in Inverin tomorrow Monday evening at 8.

Senator O’ Clochartaigh says parents just want clarification on key issues.

Oranmore is once again coming to a standstill this afternoon as thousands of people have been arriving in the village for this afternoon’s requiem mass for hurling icon Tony Keady, which will get underway within the half hour.

It follows traffic chaos and lengthy delays in the village yesterday as people began queuing from mid-day to attend the reposal of the hurling legend – and continued to arrive in a seemingly endless stream.

Killimordaly native Tony, who was 53 years of age, lived at Frenchfort in Oranmore and worked at Calasanctius College in the heart of the village, where he was heavily involved in coaching.

He’s survived by his wife Margaret and their four children.

The double All-Ireland winner and All Star played hurling with his local club Killimordaly, and was a member of the Galway senior inter-county team in the 1980s and 1990s.

Tony has been remembered in recent days as a true giant of Galway hurling who dominated the half back line alongside Pete Finnerty and Ger McInerney – a trio long considered some of the finest players to ever wear the maroon jersey.

Among an estimated 15 thousand mourners who gathered yesterday to pay their respects were hurlers and GAA players from all over Ireland.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Hurling legend Tony Keady is this evening being laid to rest on the shores of Galway Bay at Renville Cemetery.

Thousands of people attended his funeral in Oranmore to bid a final farewell to the man long considered one of the finest players to ever wear the county colours.

The Killimordaly native, who was 53 years of age, is survived by his wife Margaret and their four children.

Tony lived in Frenchfort on the outskirts of the village and worked at Calasanctius College as a caretaker, where he remained deeply involved in coaching.

Among the mourners today are Tony’s former Galway and Killimor team mates, as well as players from GAA communities all across the country.

Symbols presented at this afternoon’s mass to represent his life included an Oranmore GAA jacket, a Killimordaly jersey, the last hurley made by Tony and a sapling ash tree.

Opening his homily, Fr. Diarmuid Hogan paid tribute to the huge role Tony played in the Oranmore community:

Fr. Hogan offered that while hurling was a huge part of Tony’s life, it was not the only thing to which he had devoted himself:

Fr. Hogan also had this advice for those in attendance as to how they might help preserve Tony’s legacy:

Guards of Honor were this afternoon provided by Tony’s teammates from the 1980’s, Killimordaly and Oranmore-Maree GAA Clubs and students from Calasantius College.

Tony Keady is this evening being laid to rest at Renville Cemetery on the shores of Galway Bay.

The last song to the sung in the cemetery this evening will be The West’s Awake – a final farewell to one of the finest hurlers to ever take the field in Ireland.

First step in development of major marine industry hub in Connemara

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Údarás na Gaeltachta has taken the first step in developing a major Marine Industries Park in west Connemara.

The Marine Park will be located in Cill Chiaráin.

The first planning application for an administrative building has been submitted this week to Galway County Council, which will decide on the plans next month.

Native resources have long been championed by Údarás na Gaeltachta as the best way to promote sustainable employment in west Connemara.

The development of a Marine Industries Park in Cill Chiaráin was identified by the Údarás as one of its key points for the promotion of employment when the Government asked for proposals for job creation earlier this year.

The Údarás has appointed Máire Éinniú as executive in charge of the project and the first planning application for portable buildings on the site is now being submitted.

Two offices, meeting rooms and ancillary facilities are included in the initial application.

It is envisaged that the Marine Industries Park would focus on a combination of projects in the future based on traditional marine and foreshore work, a range of aquaculture activities as well as processing and packaging work in the longer term with the objective of promoting employment in the Gaeltacht areas.

Galway Bay fm newsroom: Galway City Council will begin the next phase of work on improving traffic congestion at the Parkmore and IDA business parks tomorrow.

The new phase of works will include the extension of the right turning lane at Briarhill Junction on the approach from the Coolagh Roundabout.

The works will provide additional capacity at the junction in order to deal with inbound morning traffic.

The improvements will be completed during off peak times of the day and city engineers say they will not cause significant delays to motorists.

Briarhill is one of the most congested traffic junctions in the country and there have been intensive campaigns for alleviation measures.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – County planners have refused an extension at Supervalu in Loughrea.

Greenstream ULC had applied for permission for the extension of the Supervalu retail space including associated shopfront, signage and ancillary storage.

However, the proposed development at the Loughrea Shopping Centre, Athenry Road has been rejected.

Planners say the project would undermine the viability and vitality of the town centre and would be contrary to Loughrea’s Local Area Plan.

Serious concern as Saolta hospitals group without a board since end of last year

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Serious concerns are being raised over Galway’s public health system as the Saolta hospitals group has been without a board for almost eight months.

The board term came to an end at the end of last year and the chairperson was re-appointed early this year.

However, there has not been any board in place since late 2016.

Roscommon Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice says the situation has the potential to threaten front line services.

It comes as the Saolta group faces a deficit of almost 40 million euro by the end of this year.

He says the fact that there is no board running the affairs of Saolta at present is unacceptable for a group responsible for running major hospitals in the west and north-west.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, Saolta says the Department of Health will be appointing a new board shortly through the state boards process.

Deputy Fitzmaurice says he intends to raise the problems facing the Saolta Group with Health Minister Simon Harris.

Galway-Roscommon TD asks Taoiseach to act on pensioner pledges

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway-Roscommon TD is asking the Taoiseach to live up to his pledges on ensuring pensioners are properly looked after.

Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice says that many people are being unfairly penalised due to the unfair method used to calculate entitlements to contributory pensions.

Changes introduced in 2012 mean the entitlement is based on how PRSI contributions made by the individual average out over their working life.

This means the system particularly affects women – with many considering it a form of ‘punishment’ for those who took career breaks to raise families.

Deputy Fitzmaurice argues Leo Varadkar often speaks of looking after pensioners – but it was his party that are responsible for the inequality in the current system.

The Independent TD says the Taoiseach needs to act on his word and ensure the whole system is looked at.

Salthill native hopes to replace Michael D Higgins as President

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Salthill native is hoping to replace Michael D Higgins as the next President of Ireland.

However, Senator Gerard Craughwell claims 50 percent of the country may not particularly like him.

The former president of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland wants to take over from Michael D next year, but admits his part in ending the Good Friday drinking ban may have made him some enemies.

President Higgins has previously claimed he only wanted the role for one term, but speculation is mounting that he could run again.

Gerard Craughwell, a married father of two, served in the British Army until 1974 after a brief stint working as a bartender in London.

On his return to Ireland, he became a teacher – and was elected to the Seanad during the 2014 by-election

Senator Craughwell says in terms of the Irish Presidency, there should at least be a competition – but he also thinks his track record may split public opinion.
