Overall Northern counties featured strongly with Donegal and Down also making the top 5 along with Kildare and Limerick.

Out of the 32 counties, Galway came in 25th, with the accent deemed by some to be ‘just a bit neutral.’

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A hard BREXIT would put more than one in ten Galway jobs at risk.

A study from IBEC has revealed that 13% of Galway’s workforce would be susceptible to becoming unemployed if a hard border was introduced with the north.

The most at-risk sector in Galway is the Agri-Food industry, followed by accommodation and tour operators, manufacturing and freight transport.

Meanwhile, it’s estimated that a hard BREXIT would cost farmers around 3,000 euro each due to trade barriers.

Nationally, Cavan, Monaghan, Longford and Kerry are the counties most exposed to the economic effects of a hard Brexit.

Amy Forde from the Irish Farmers Journal says farmers would be among the worst hit if a border is imposed.

An Bord Pleanala shoots down proposal for Clonfert windfarm

Galway Bay fm newsroom – An Bord Pleanala has refused to grant permission for a windfarm in the Clonfert area.

A ten year permission for the project was approved by county planners in October subject to 24 conditions.

However, this was appealed to the higher planning authority which has decided to refuse permission on environmental grounds.

The project was led by Frank O Domhnaill and Richard Bourns.

It would have seen the provision of up to 5 wind turbines, new internal access roads and the upgrading of existing roads to facilitate delivery of abnormal loads.

In an appeal to An Bord Pleanala, locals raised concerns regarding the development.

The higher planning authority has decided to overturn the council’s grant of permission.

The board says the development would be within 15km of an extensive rane of protected sites, and close to the River Suck and River Little Brosna callows.

These areas are important to wintering and migratory birds, wetland birds and waterfowl.

It says the construction and operation of a windfarm in the area could pose a disturbance and collision risk to a variety of important species.

Call for further redress for survivors of Magdalene laundries and Mother and Baby Homes

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There’s a call for further redress to survivors of Magdalene laundries and Mother and Baby Homes, such as those in Galway

The UN Committee Against Torture says its previous recommendations on historical abuse have either been only partially implemented, or not at all.

Following a review of Ireland’s compliance with the UN Convention on Torture and Other Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment, Ireland is complimented for its progress on ending the incarceration of children in adult prisons, and the Citizens Assembly, but it’s sharply critical of other issues.

The UN Committee against Torture or UNCAT says Ireland should undertake a thorough impartial investigation into Magdalene Laundries that has the power to compel witnesses and ensure punishment of those responsible.

The UNCAT also wants redress for survivors of Mother and baby homes, and is concerned that some survivors of institutional abuse have been left outside the now-closed redress scheme.

Solicitor Fionna Fox says just 15 thousand out of 170 thousand people who passed through residential institutions got redress.

While the recommendations are non-binding, the Government will be studying the report.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The County Council has this evening confirmed it is taking legal action against Tuam firm WERS Waste.

The action relates to the operation of a waste facility on the outskirts of the town – which the local authority says WERS has no permit to operate.

In a statement, Galway County Council says it can confirm that WERS Waste do not have a valid waste facility permit for the Airglooney facility.

It further adds that the local authority has initiated legal proceedings against the well-known firm, which is based at Tuam Business Park on the Wier Road.

It’s understood the County Council itself only stopped using the facility after an intervention by the Waste Enforcement Regional Lead Authority.

WERS Waste has not responded to Galway Bay FM News request for comment on the situation.

The fairytale continues – Ireland U18 Women book their spot in FIBA U18 European Championship final

Ireland Under 18 women dared to dream at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght this evening and it certainly paid off as they drove home to a historic and memorable 68-57 point win against Poland in the semi-final of the FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship Division B.

The promised land of Division A basketball is now on the cards for the team in 2018 – as they have officially been promoted for next year’s championships – as too is a coveted spot in Sunday night’s final at 8.30pm in Tallaght in front of what is set to be another sell-out crowd in Tallaght. This squad now have the unique honour of not only being the first Irish basketball team to reach a European Championship final, but to also play Division A basketball and, for Head Coach, Tommy O’Mahony, the smile on his face couldn’t get any bigger.

“It’s hard to believe. I’m lost for words,” he said afterwards. “They were absolutely fantastic, especially when there was only four points in it down the stretch with a minute or two to go they stepped up, nailed some shots – it was absolutely fantastic.

“We lacked a bit of composure at times, we didn’t do what we were supposed to do on things, but we got them refocused in the second quarter and did a lot better job. I think they’re mature beyond their years out there and it’s a night that will live on in the memory for a long time.”

Indeed, it was Poland who got the better of the opening exchanges as the girls in green struggled to settle their nerves. The thunderous crowd at the National Basketball Arena were behind the Irish from the get-go and there was huge applause when Dayna Finn scored Ireland’s first basket. Poland’s 5-0 scoring run halted momentum and they maintained their lead, 15-9 at the end of the first quarter. Ireland took back the lead two minutes into the second quarter, after a fantastic scoring run was finished off by Sorcha Tiernan’s pinpoint three, which forced the Polish to call a timeout and regroup. The emphatic roar of the Irish fans guided the team on and they led 28-23 at halftime.

There was a deafening roar when Dayna Finn weaved her way through the Polish defence and put Ireland ten points up as the third quarter ticked by, and both Claire Melia and Rachel Huijsdens made huge threes to hold on to a two-point lead going into the last. The crowd were in full song when Louise Scannell came off the bench to make two huge scores in the fourth and though Poland matched them score for score, they began to have troubles of their own when their top scorer Julia Nielacna was fouled out. In the end, it was destined to be Ireland’s day as they booked their place in the European Championship final on a scoreline of 68-57, with their opponents being decided on court at the NBA right now as Germany face Great Britain.

Elsewhere, there were more celebrations as Ireland Under 16 men also ran home to a huge victory at their FIBA U16 European Championships, when they drove home to a 98-56 win over Norway in their third group game this morning.

“The team earned that win today,” said Head Coach, Pat Price. “They didn’t take a break at all in terms of focus and execution and when you have work rate like that you get that type of result.”

Today’s win came off the back of another big win for the squad on Friday afternoon which saw them overcome the Slovak Republic. A superb display from the entire team today saw eleven of the twelve squad members get on the scoring, with the Ireland showing their passing and scoring prowess throughout. The squad have a rest day tomorrow before playing Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday.
