Minister urged to act following concerns over Galway Roscommon foster services

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Childrens’ Minister is being urged to ‘get real’ after a HIQA report raised concerns over foster services in Galway and Roscommon.

Fianna Fáil childrens’ spokesperson and Galway East TD Anne Rabbitte says the findings of the inspection report are worrying.

Of the eight standards inspected in the Galway/Roscommon area, one was compliant, three were substantially compliant and there were four moderate breaches.

It found that a quarter of carers did not have a review for over three years, however, these are scheduled to be completed by the end of this month.

Improvements were needed to managing allegations against foster carers, updating of garda vetting and the frequency of visit to foster carers.

Tusla has this afternoon responded to the concerns raised.

It says allegations of abuse across the Galway/Roscommon service will be dealt with in a timely fashion and all complaints and are now tracked through bi-monthly meetings.

Deputy Anne Rabbitte says Childrens’ Minister Katherine Zappone needs to get real about the endemic issues facing child protection services across Ireland.

The dates and venues for the 2017 International Rules Series between Australia and Ireland have been confirmed.

The GAA will send a team of Gaelic football stars under the management of Armagh’s Joe Kernan to Australia this November to defend the Cormac McAnallen trophy they clinched at Croke Park in 2015.

This year will see the International Rules Series revert to a two test competition.

The opening game will take place on Sunday, November 12 at the Adelaide Oval.

The deciding test will take place the following Saturday night, November 18, at the Domain Stadium in Perth in what will be the final game held in that venue.

The AFL have confirmed that Geelong Coach Chris Scott, who was assistant coach under Alastair Clarkson in the 2015 IRS, will be their head coach for the 2017 tests.

Ireland manager Joe Kernan and his back room team have been monitoring performances and form players during the League and Championship and are due to begin training from mid-September.

In 2015 there was a 23-man squad featuring players from 12 different counties that was captained by Dublin’s Bernard Brogan with Mayo’s Lee Keegan Vice-Captain.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Students’ Unions at GMIT and NUI Galway are strongly criticising local opposition to proposed new student accommodation at the Westwood Hotel site in Newcastle.

The Westwood Hotel has been purchased by the Ziggurat Student Investment Fund – which plans to replace the hotel with high-end student accommodation.

Dangan and Newcastle residents are unhappy with the proposed development.

The NUIG and GMIT student bodies say they will vehemently reject the ‘not in my backyard’ attitude of some residents and councillors in the locality.

In a joint statement issued today, the unions say students have proven themselves to be valuable assets in any local community, and shouldn’t be subjected to damaging stereotypes.

GMIT SU president Mark O’Brien says students are vulnerable at this time of year and should be supported in their search for somewhere to live.

Pressure mounts on three ministers to solve N59 impasse

$

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The N59 Action Group is pursuing its call for a meeting between senior Ministers in relevant Departments in an effort to break the impasse which is holding up an upgrade of the road from Oughterard to Clifden.

Galway West T.D. Noel Grealish, has now declared his support for this call from Connemara.

The Independent deputy has backed the call for a meeting between three senior Ministers in an effort to break the logjam that has held up the N. 59 upgrade project.

Deputy Grealish is now writing to the Roads and Transport Minister, Shane Ross; to the Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht Minister, Heather Humphries and to the Community and Rural Affairs Minister, Michael Ring requesting a high level meeting.

This correspondence is in support of letters sent by the N. 59 Action Group to all three Ministers earlier this week.

Minister Ross said in Connemara last week that such a meeting could set a precedent and he backed off from the proposal.

However, Deputy Grealish says that the N. 59 issue is of such urgency that it has to be tackled now at a high level.

He says that the people of Connemara could be left without a proper road into the future unless various agencies take a proactive approach.

City public hospitals under serious pressure due to overcrowding

Galway Bay fm newsroom: Patients attending the city’s public hospitals are facing significant delays today.

The full capacity protocol has been put in place at UHG, as more than 30 patients wait on trolleys.

Management at UHG say all efforts continue to be made to identify patients who are appropriate for discharge.

It’s understood some patients have been sent to the outpatients department at Unit 2 Merlin Park in a bid to ease the pressure.

Long queues have formed at the Merlin Park unit this afternoon as a result.

Patients are being urged to only attend the hospitals in the case of a genuine emergency and to contact their GP in the first instance.

Over 50 thousand Galway people on waiting lists at UHG

Galway Bay fm newsroom:

The HSE is hoping to increase the number of procedures being carried out at Merlin Park Hospital in a bid to ease the pressure at UHG.

Over 50 thousand people are on waiting lists in Galway, with nearly 6 thousand of those waiting over 18 months for an appointment.

The SAOLTA Hospital group plans to reduce waiting times by developing outpatient services and day surgeries at the Merlin Park site.

The hospital group has already successfully reduced the inpatient waiting lists by transferring certain procedures from UHG to Portiuncula, Mayo and Roscommon hospitals.

Ann Cosgrove, Chief Operating Officer with the SAOLTA Hospital Group in Galway says that while short term measures may help, a modern hospital capable of handling the required capacity is needed.

Galway Bay fm newsroom:

City planners have given the green light for phase two of Knocknacarra District Centre.

Targeted Investment Opportunities ICAV is to develop a mixed-use 2 storey building at Western Distributor Road.

Phase 2 of Gateway Retail Park will encompass 6 retail units, a creche with an outdoor play area and drop in facility, a café/restaurant, first floor gym and offices.

The plans also include a new east/west pedestrian link with 151 basement and surface car parking spaces and 116 cycle spaces at surface level.

Phase 2 will be located north of the existing Dunnes Stores and vehicle access would be from a new entrance from the internal access road at the northern boundary of the site.

Permission has been granted with 33 conditions attached.

One stipulates that the developer must pay 20 thousand euro towards the provision of a new pedestrian crossing at Bothar Stiofáin, and cycle facilities on the adjoining road network.

Major concern over ambulance turnaround times at Galway public hospitals

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Major concerns are being raised over the turnaround time for ambulances at Galway’s public hospitals.

One in five ambulance visits to UHG takes over 60 minutes – the national turnaround target is 20 minutes.

At Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, just over one in ten ambulances are sent back out within the 20 minute time-frame.

Galway Roscommon TD Eugene Murphy says missing turnaround targets has a knock-on effect for the ambulance service, making it more difficult for it to achieve its own call-out targets.

The Ireland Under 18 women’s basketball team are aiming to write themselves into the history books this coming Friday, August 11th, as they contest the quarter-final of the FIBA U18 European Championship Division B against Israel in Dublin.

The two teams will go head-to-head in what is expected to be a sell-out game at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght at 6.15pm.

Tommy O’Mahony’s charges are hoping to go further than any other underage Irish team has gone before as they bid to reach the semi-finals on Saturday, from where they would have two opportunities to qualify for Division A – a feat no underage Irish team has ever achieved.

“They [Israel] are really tough,” O’Mahony stated after Ireland topped Pool D unbeaten on Wednesday evening. “They have a lot of guards and a lot of shooters – they like to shoot the three in transition. We’ll have to work on our defence, big time.”

Indeed, it’s truly been an incredible week for Irish basketball, with huge crowds attending the games throughout the week, and the hosts currently lead the tournament statistics for assists.

“We always talk about sharing the ball and taking the right option and when other teams are scouting us, there’s no one player who dominates the scoring,” O’Mahony added.

All of the tournament’s quarter-finals will take place at the National Basketball Arena on Friday, with the remaining classification games (9th-23rd place) tipping off at the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown.

Tickets for all games are available now on www.eventbrite.ie and Irish fans are being advised to get their tickets early as it’s predicted the game will sell out.

The FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship Division B in Dublin is proudly supported by Sport Ireland, Fáilte Ireland, BBX Ireland and South Dublin County Council.

Nursing home beds lie empty as UHG creaks under pressure

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There are at least 70 empty nursing home spaces across Galway which could be used to alleviate the current pressure on UHG.

The latest study from Nursing Homes Ireland reveals that of 15 Galway homes surveyed, 69 beds are vacant.

It comes as management at UHG issue another appeal today as the hospital struggles to cope with overcrowding, and has implemented the full capacity protocol

Today, 36 patients are waiting on trolleys due to a high number of admissions at the emergency department.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news the HSE has pointed out that the childrens’ ED is not affected by the congestion in the adult department.

So far this year almost 3,700 patients have spent time waiting on a trolley at UHG.

New figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation reveal that it’s one of the worst trolley figures in the country behind University Hospital Limerick and Cork University Hospital.

Nationally, the INMO says almost 58,000 people found themselves on trolleys in the year to July.

Foetal abnormality scans offered to majority of Galway’s pregnant women

Galway Bay fm newsroom – All pregnant women who attend UHG are offered a foetal anomaly scan, which is used to detect fatal foetal abnormalities and other medical issues.

Around half of pregnant women attending Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe receive the scan, based on risk factors including family history, maternal age or existing medical conditions.

The statistics follow the revelation that one in four Irish maternity units don’t offer scans for fatal foetal abnormalities.

The tests to discover whether babies have life-threatening defects have been recommended by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists since the year 2000.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, the Saolta Hospitals Group says a series of scans and tests are available to pregnant women when recommended on medical grounds.
