Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway education expert says the new grading system makes the Leaving Cert fairer.

This year will see a different points system come into force – students will be awarded one of eight wider grades as opposed to traditional As and Bs.

The new grades will mean more points for lower grades in higher level students.

The aim is to encourage more students to stick with higher level papers.

Clodagh Higgins of Careers Clinic Galway says the new grading system which comes into effect this year will have its advantages.

We’ll have a special feature on FYI Galway at 5 this evening, which aims to explain how the new Leaving Cert grading system works.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Salthill native says a race for the Irish Presidency is essential to democracy.

Independent Senator Gerard Craughwell is hoping to replace Michael D Higgins as the next President of Ireland.

However, the former president of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland admits his part in ending the Good Friday drinking ban may have made him some enemies.

President Higgins has previously claimed he only wanted the role for one term, but speculation is mounting that he could run again.

Gerard Craughwell says it’s essential that Michael D doesn’t run unopposed if he decides to stay another term.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Green Party has unveiled a giant banner near the beach at Blackrock Diving Tower in Salthill to protest against oil drilling off the south-west coast.

It’s after a license was granted in July to provide an oil company with access to billions of barrells worth of oil at the Porcupine Basin.

The Green Party says the move is severely detrimental to tackling climate change and the operation will produce almost two billion tonnes of co2.

The giant banner unfurled along the sand at Blackrock was held up by ten people.

It read ‘Keep it in the Ground’ – and urges the Government to rethink Ireland’s committment to the environment.

Dispute over separation of children on language grounds at Connemara pre-school

$

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A dispute has arisen in Connemara about the separation of pre-school pupils based on their Irish language capability in a local centre.

Now a group of parents in the Indreabhán area are to meet the board of an Irish language and family support centre in that area to discuss the issue.

There are claims it is separation on linguistic grounds.

Others will say it’s a practical and positive step to protect and enhance the Irish language.

The Ionad Tacaíochta Teallaigh in Indreabhán has a remit to foster the Irish language at its creche, pre school and services.

The Centre has a long standing policy of separating children in the preschool.

Those from totally Irish speaking homes were kept together to ensure that teaching, contact and conversation was totally in Irish.

There is now a reaffirmation of this policy but a significant number of parents who want all children to be together – irrespective of language capability – attended a public meeting.

There are suggestions that some children may be moved to other locations arising from the dispute.

A meeting is to be held with the centre committee – but they say the basic policy of separation will stay in place.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Plans have been submitted for a major housing development in Barna.

Burkeway Homes Ltd is hoping to build 113 homes at Truskey East.

As the development involved more than 100 houses, it is deemed to be a strategic housing project, and the plans have been submitted directly to An Bord Pleanala.

The higher planning authority is due to make a decision next month.

Double-pronged appeal to major changes at Glenlo Abbey Hotel in Bushypark

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Plans for major changes at Glenlo Abbey on the outskirts of the city have been appealed to An Bord Pleanala.

County planners gave the go-ahead for the changes to the hotel in Bushypark last month.

However, the decision has been appealed amid concerns over private property and protected structures.

The project by Baswal Ltd would see a single-storey extension of the existing golf clubhouse.

It would also involve the demolition of part of the link between the existing bedroom block and Pavillion building.

The development would also include the construction of a new three-storey extension containing 17 additional bedrooms, a laundry and a prep kitchen.

There are also plans for a single storey spa facility within the existing walled garden.

A canopy and weather-protected entrance lobby would also be provided at the lower ground floor leading to the existing Oak Cellar bar.

The grant of permission has been appealed by local residents who feel that their property is regularly trespassed upon by users of the golf driving range.

In another appeal by Prior Park Assets Ireland Ltd, it’s claimed that a condition should be included to ensure protected structures on site are adequately protected.

An Bord Pleanala will make a decision on the appeal in November.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Work is to begin shortly on new cardiac facilities at UHG.

The HSE is seeking a contractor to build new Cardiac Catheter labs and a new Cardiothoracic ward at the Newcastle campus.

The new facilities will be provided on the first floor or the existing 2A block and 2C block at UHG.

The works are to be carried out on the site of the live acute hospital, and will run in parallel with other works contracts at the facility.

The works will be in the centre of the main hospital floor, in the immediate vicinity of functioning clinical areas.

The project will be carried out in three phases, the first of which will see an existing coronary care unit stripped out and replaced with two cath labs.

The deadline for the submission of tenders to the HSE is September 12th.

Rival cinema group opposes expansion of Eye cinema

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There’s been a setback in plans for a new boutique cinema at Wellpark.

The plans for a four screen facility at the Eye Cinema was given the go-ahead by city planners in recent weeks.

However, the grant of approval has now been appealed to An Bord Pleanala.

The appellant previously raised concerns with the City Council on behalf of Galway Multiplex Ltd, which runs the IMC cinema at Terryland.

Radical Properties Ltd is planning to change the use of a previously approved retail and restaurant space to a new four-screen facility at the Eye Cinema.

The development would also include a restaurant and bar.

Permission was granted with 9 conditions attached – one stipulated that a traffic management plan must be put in place for the duration of the works.

Suzanne O’Neill of Rathfarnham, Dublin has now appealed the plans to An Bord Pleanala.

The appellant had previously raised concerns with the City Council on behalf of Galway Multiplex Ltd, which runs the IMC cinema at Terryland.

It cited concerns over the capacity of the road infrastructure in the area, and what they describe as an ‘over-intensification’ of the area.

When contacted by Galway Bay fm news, the IMC Cinema Group refused to comment on the matter.

The higher planning authority is due to make a decision in December.
