Galway Bay fm newsroom – The CEO and clinical director of the Saolta Hospitals group have today told an Oireachtas committee that Galway needs a new hospital.
Clinical director Dr Pat Nash and CEO Maurice Power have today addressed a committee on the Future of Healthcare.
They told the meeting that UHG, as a centre of excellence, is catering to patients from across six counties – and the hospital is not fit for purpose.
It follows several calls for a new acute hospital to be built at Merlin Park.
Members of all hospital groups across Ireland were requested to attend today’s discussion by Galway West/South Mayo TD Hildegarde Naughton.
Deputy Naughton says despite significant investment, capacity at UHG has not improved.
She says a new hospital at Merlin Park is the logical solution.
The cross-party committee is currently drafting a national report to be presented to government next year.
It’s understood this report will contain proposals for a new hospital for Galway.
Saolta Clinical Director Pat Nash says he and other clinicians at UHG have already lodged a submission calling for a replacement hospital.
