Galway Bay fm newsroom – The contract for a ferry service to the Aran Islands has been extended again, to tomorrow fortnight December 1st, as attempts continue to secure a permanent service for the islanders.
Island Ferries Teo took the decision in October to withdraw the service from this month until mid-March due to what it describes as ‘policy decisions beyond its control’.
The planned withdrawal of service follows a 2011 bye-law which introduced ‘per-passenger’ levies – previously, a ‘per vessel’ system was in place.
In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, solicitors for Island Ferries Teo says the company will be further extending all ferry services to and from Inis Mór in the Aran Islands up to the 1st of December.
It says all ferry services to and from the Island will be then withdrawn from the 1st December up to the 17th March 2017, unless an amicable resolution is reached with Government and Galway County Council on the ongoing dispute in respect to levy charges at Cill Rónáin harbour.
This latest extension will enable county council members to discuss the company’s latest proposals at their next meeting on November 28th, a few days ahead of the December 1st deadline
