Galway Bay fm newsroom – A transient campsite with a minimum overnight charge is being proposed to help tackle Galway’s ongoing problem with illegal Traveller encampments.
That’s according to City Mayor Noel Larkin, who says that the return of an illegal camp at Doughiska is unacceptable and solutions are required.
He says the need for multi-million euro repairs at the Carrowbrowne halting site on the Headford road suggest that a charge would be needed for a transient camp.
Galway Traveller Movement, which has previously accused the City Council of failing to deliver culturally appropriate accomodation, is welcoming the suggestion.
Margaret O’ Riada says that the site could be for public use and not just limited to Travellers.
City Mayor Noel Larkin says the City Council is working to provide more Traveller accommodation.
