Galway Bay fm newsr0om – Trained divers will carry out a specialised simulated cable repair in the sea off Inis Mór in the coming days.
The fault simulation is being carried out ahead of major repair works on an undersea electricity cable which serves the Aran Islands.
Inis Meain and Inis Oirr were left without power for four days last week due to a major fault on the cable.
The islanders are currently using power from two 36-tonne generators which were shipped in to Inis Oirr early last week.
The ESB is working to put arrangements in place to permanently repair the undersea fault, which is located around 2km off the coast of Inis Mór.
It’s expected that these works will take 3-4 weeks to complete, using a specialised marine habitat created by ESB international engineers.
