Resurfacing could scuttle new road for Connamara

Galway Bay Fm newsroom-Galway County Council engineers now want to do some resurfacing work on the road between Oughterard and Maam Cross in Connemara while a plan to do a total upgrade of that section of the N. 59 remains deadlocked.
However, Connemara Area Councillors expressed fears at their meeting this week that the major development plan for the road could now be effectively ended.

Bord Pleanála have given permission for a major job on the 15 kilometre section but with a condition that the National Parks and Wildlife Service would be in agreement with the Co Council’s work methods; that agreement has not been forthcoming in over 2 years, on environmental grounds.
Connemara Councillors were told this week that the National Parks and Wildlife Service had so far only responded to two of eight documents sent to them by Galway County Council.
Councillors were bitterly critical of the Wildlife Service with calls that the matter should be brought up with the Minister responsible.
But given the rapidly worsening state of the N. 59, Roads Director, Liam Gavin said that something had to done – probably some resurfacing early next year
