Coffey Construction gets temporary injunction against firm blockading Athenry premises

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A civil engineering company has secured a temporary High Court injunction preventing security operatives from blockading the entrance of the firm’s Athenry-based headquarters.

Coffey Construction Limited secured the interim order yesterday against receiver David O’Connor of the firm BDO in respect of a blockade that began earlier this week at Moanbaun, Athenry.

The High Court heard that arising from a dispute over Coffey Construction’s lease on the property, last Tuesday morning 15 security guards with two large white vans and dogs physically blocked vehicular access to Coffey Construction’s HQ.

The court heard that the company fears that the blockade, which it says is unlawful, will be damaging and will possibly drive it to insolvency if allowed continue.

Counsel said it’s Coffey’s case that it has a valid lease, for which it pays €100,000 per year, for the premises.

He said that the security guards on the blockade, who describe themselves as bailiffs did not carry any mandatory identification or licence numbers as required under the Private Security Services Act.

The matter has been reported to the Private Security Authority, counsel said.

Coffey Construction has 280 employees, 88 of whom are based in Athenry.

Counsel said the workers were eventually able to gain access to the premises.

However, they have to park over 2.5km away, which presents health and safety concerns to the employees, especially at this time of year.

Yesterday, Mr Justice Tony O’Connor granted orders including one restraining the defendants and his agents from restricting the company’s access to the property at Moanbaun, Athenry.

Noting the evidence put before the court the judge said he was satisfied to grant the orders sought.

The case will return before the court next week.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A local councillor is calling for more CCTV in the Athenry/Monivea after a recent spate of break-ins and anti-social behaviour.

Fianna Fail Councillor Shelly Herterich Quinn is urging Galway County Council and Gardaí to work together to install more CCTV cameras.

Both Smarties Montessori at Raheen Road in Athenry and the Applegreen service station on Swan Gate were broken into recently.

There has also been break-ins at the Gort na Ri estate and at the Raheen Community pitches changing rooms – where windows were smashed and damage was caused to indoor storage facilities.

Gardai confirmed at a public JPC meeting on Monday night that a gang is targeting rural areas for break-ins.

Councillor Herterich Quinn says this is further proof that more CCTV is needed.

Together, from Sydney to San Francisco, they will light up the night as they hit the road to Run in the Dark.

Join hundreds of fellow runners in Galway to Run in the Dark on 13th November 2019. The run will take place on the Salthill Promenade at 8pm.

You can choose between running 5k or 10k… and if your running shoes are a little dusty, you can even walk the 5k route.

Through Run in the Dark, Mark Pollock aims to inspire people to build resilience and collaborate with others so that, together, they achieve more than they thought possible. For some that means gathering a group of friends or colleagues to train hard and get fit with a 5k or 10k run. For others it means building a team of experts to perform better. For us, at the Mark Pollock Trust, it means supporting Mark to deal with the ongoing physical, psychological and financial impact of his catastrophic spinal cord injury, while also allowing him to pursue his personal mission to cure paralysis in our lifetime (Click here to learn more about Mark’s mission).

To find out more about what Run in the Dark pop-ups helps to achieve, see here.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The approval for a 50-bed residential care home in Tuam has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

Last month, county planners granted planning permission to the HSE for the new development at Sean Purcell Road.

This decision has been appealed to the higher planning authority by Liam Madden with an address of Longford Town.

In his submission, Mr. Madden explains the proposal would be better suited to Galway City.

He also claims the Ecological Impact Assessment submitted by the HSE falls short of an Environmnetal Impact Assessment.

The HSE’s planned development consists of a 2-storey courtyard building with adjoining service and day-care wings comprising 50 en suite bedrooms, together with all ancillary facilities.

This includes a reception area, day-care and therapy spaces, activity rooms and dining areas, as well as family accommodation, offices and administration areas.

An Bord Pleanala is due to make its decision in March.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Nearly three quarters of funding allocated to Galway under the 2018 Town and Village Renewal Scheme remains unspent.

That’s according to Fianna Fáil Roscommon-Galway TD Eugene Murphy who says the government is not delivering on its promises to communities in the county.

The Town and Village Renewal Scheme is an initiative under the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development to rejunevate rural towns and villages throughout Ireland.

Deputy Murphy says information received by his party shows a national underspend of €20 million in the town and village renewal scheme over 2017 and 2018.

The figures also show Galway received only 28 per cent of its allocated funding in 2018.

Deputy Murphy has slammed the government claiming there’s a major difference between announcement of funding allocations and what’s actually delivered.
