Public consultation in bid to provide bin service to rural areas of south Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Rural areas of South Galway which are not serviced by a refuse provider are being consulted about the possible rollout of a service.

Morans Refuse and Recycling, which operates a service in Kilchreest, has been consulted to expand into surrounding townlands .

If there is sufficient demand, areas such as Ballacurra, Gortnamanagh, Sonnagh, Ballycooney, Cahercrea, Barragarraun and Caheratrim areas could avail of a similar service.

Independent Councillor Geraldine Donohue has been visiting local communities in a bid to gauge local interest.

She says she has received up to 40 expressions of interest and any remaining applications should be forwarded to her as soon as possible.


Connacht Hurling and Football Club Championships Fast Approaching

The provincial club championships are fast approaching with games scheduled to take place on the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd of November in Football while in Hurling, the games will begin on the bank holiday weekend in October.

The First Galway team in action will be the Galway Junior Football Champions Glenamaddy when they take on the Mayo Junior representatives Kilmaine who are managed by Dunmore’s John Donnellan at a Galway Venue on November the 2nd. The winners of that game will play the Roscommon representatives Ballinameen in the Connacht Semi-Final on the following weekend also at a Galway Venue. Both Kilmaine and Ballinameen still have county finals but their opponents Castlebar Mitchels and St Brigids are ineligible to play in the Connacht Championship.

In Intermediate, The winners of Oughterard and Micheal Breathnach who meet in their replay on Saturday week will face the winners of the Roscommon and Leitrim Championships in the Connacht Semi-Final on Saturday November the 9th at a Galway Venue. Tulsk and Oran will meet in the Roscommon Final while Drumkeernan or Leitrim Gaels will meet in the Leitrim Decider.

Meanwhile in Senior, Corofin or Tuam Stars will meet the winners of the Leitrim or Mayo Senior Championship in their Connacht Club Semi-Final on Sunday November 10th. Sean O’Heslins or Glencar/Manorhamilton meet on Sunday in the Leitrim County Senior Final in Carrick on Shannon with the Mayo decider between Ballaghaderreen or Ballintubber taking place on the 19th of October in McHale Park.

In Hurling, the County Junior 1 Champions who will be decided on Saturday in Moycullen at 1pm will face the winners of the Semi-Final between the Sligo and Leitrim Champions who are still to play their county finals. The Sligo Final takes place on Sunday with Easkey taking on Naomh Eoin in Markievicz Park at 4pm while in Leitrim, Carrick Hurling face Cluainin Iomáint in their County Senior Final on Saturday the 19th in Carrick On Shannon.

Regarding the Connacht Intermediate Hurling Club Championship, The Galway Championship is still at the Quarter Final stage but the winners will not have much time to celebrate as they are due to face the winners of the Semi-Final that features London and the winners of the Mayo and Roscommon Senior Hurling Championships. Four Roads are the Roscommon champions while Castlebar Mitchels and Tooreen meet in the Mayo County Final on Sunday next.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway 2020 has been launched in Belgium with European Commissioner for Trade Phil Hogan as guest of honour

The launch in Brussels was attended by members of the diaspora, partners from cities and regions attending this week’s European Week of Regions and Cities, as well as leading Belgian travel professionals and journalists.

The launch was supported by Tourism Ireland who say that Galway 2020 will offer Belgian holidaymakers a unique cultural and artistic experience.

Significant funding to support Irish language scheme in honor of Galway hurler Joe McDonagh

Almost €700 thousand in funding has been allocated to initiatives supporting the Irish language nationwide – including a new scheme in honor of the late Galway hurler Joe McDonagh.

The funding of €683 thousand has been awarded to Glór na nGael to develop the Joe McDonagh Foundation and support the Teanga Tí/Family language scheme.

The Joe McDonagh Foundation encourages the use of Irish in innovative ways in GAA clubs nationwide – with six Galway clubs participating to date.

While the Teanga Tí/Family language scheme supports households where Irish is the main language – and works with 15 gaelscoileanna nationwide including Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh in Knocknacarra.

Gaeltacht Minister and Galway West TD Sean Kyne says the schemes support the use of Irish outside the education system and traditional Gaeltacht areas.

Med tech firm to create 100 jobs at city and Rosmuc sites

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A med tech firm is to create 100 jobs at its base at the Tuam Road in the city and at its facility in Rosmuc.

Complete Laboratory Solutions is making the announcement at the ‘Med in Ireland’ conference being held at the RDS in Dublin today.

The firm has a base in Rosmuc dedicated to food and environment which has been in operation for the last 25 years.

Its city base is dedicated to med-pharma and is in operation since 2008.

The firm provides sampling, analysis and on-contract analysts to the food, environmental, pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

Over 190 staff are employed between both sites serving a portfolio of over 600 Irish and international clients.

Galway’s local authorities urged to secure slice of new greenway and cycling infrastructure fund

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway city and county councils are being urged to secure their slice of new funding for greenways and cycling infrastructure.

The government announced €9m in this week’s budget to be split between cycling and greenway infrastructure projects across the country.

Green party city councillor Pauline O’Reilly has questioned the size of the national figure and is urging Galway’s local authories to secure funding before other councils get there first.

She argues Galway’s public representatives need to ensure the city and county get a fair share of funds…

UHG has second highest number of people on trolleys today

Galway Bay fm newsroom:

There are 49 patients on trolleys at University Hospital Galway today, the second highest figure nationwide.

That’s according to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation

They show the figures for UHG are second to University Hospital Limerick where 70 people are waiting.

Nationally, 487 patients are on trolleys in A&Es today awaiting admission.


Weekend Basketball Preview

There is another full programme of games this weekend in the National Basketball League’s with all four Galway sides in action on Saturday.

In the Women’s Super League, one of three unbeaten teams is newly-promoted Maree, and they will welcome the league champions, Liffey Celtics, to Galway on Saturday in what is expected to be one of the big games of the weekend. Maree boast a strong Irish core with some skilled underage stars stepping into the squad this year and will be hoping that home-court advantage will help them to have the edge this weekend. Liffey meanwhile come into the game off the back of a big win against Killester last weekend, that saw them outscore the Dubliners 35-12 in the final quarter of the game to win out 91-82 in the end. They’ll be hoping to carry that confidence through to this weekend’s clash. In the Women’s Division One, NUIG Mystics travel to Limerick to take on UL Huskies.

In the Men’s Super League on Saturday, Maree are away to Belfast Star and Moycullen make the trip to UCD Marian.

Connacht name team to play Dragons

John Porch is set for his first competitive start for Connacht after he was named in the starting 15 for tomorrow night’s Guinness PRO14 tie with the Dragons at Rodney Parade (k/o 7.35pm).
 
The inclusion of the Australian winger is the only change from the side that defeated Benetton last weekend, with the Connacht side running in 6 tries in the 41-5 win.
 
Porch plays in a back three that includes winger Matt Healy and full-back Tiernan O’Halloran, while Peter Robb and Kyle Godwin are selected at midfield.
 
Caolin Blade and Conor Fitzgerald, who both impressed last time out, continue their half-back partnership at scrum-half and out-half respectively.
 
The front five is unchanged for the third straight game, with hooker Tom McCartney alongside props Paddy McAllister and Finlay Bealham, and a second-row combination of Gavin Thornbury and Quinn Roux.
 
Captain Jarrad Butler continues at open-side, with Eoghan Masterson at blindside and Paul Boyle at number 8.

Almost 2000 Galway children awaiting speech and language therapy

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Almost 2,000 children in Galway are waiting on speech and language therapy appointments.

Figures obtained through Freedom of Information show 906 children up to the age of 17 are waiting on further speech and language therapy, while 226 are still waiting on their first appointment.

An additional 600 children in Galway are on waiting lists for initial assessments for speech and language services.

Nationally, 685 children have been waiting at least a year for an assessment with a speech and language therapist.

NUIG researcher co-authors study on octopus evolution

A researcher from NUIG has co-authored a new study on the octopus which has unearthed new findings on its evolution.

The study found that an octopus living in deeper oceans has wartier skin compared to its shallow water dwelling counterparts.

When comparing octopus types from different ocean depths, scientists weren’t even sure if they belonged to the same species.

DNA has revealed, however, that they are the same species but the deeper the ocean the smaller and wartier the octopus.

Midlands North-West MEP wins EU parliament support for action on mental health

A new EU Parliament report calling for specific measures on mental health, via amendments written by MEP for this region Maria Walsh has been adopted by a majority of MEPs today.

The release of the report coincides with World Mental Health Day today.

The report calls for action on mental health at an EU level.

UHG to rollout programme in bid to reduce numbers who contract HIV

A new programme to reduce the number of people who contract HIV is to be rolled out at a public STI clinic at UHG.

The HIV PrEP programme will begin at a number of clinics nationwide from next month after funding was allocated in budget 2020.The programme will be delivered at an STI clinic at UHG and six other such centres nationwide.

It follows an announcement of funding of €5.4 million for a full roll-out next year in Budget 2020.

A PrEP programme involves the pre-emptive use of anti retro viral medication to prevent HIV infection, within a holistic prevention service.

This includes regular monitoring and testing, as well as advice and counselling.

HIV PrEP is a combination tablet which is taken by HIV negative people before exposure to HIV in a bid to prevent HIV infection.

Those who attend an approved service and are found to be at substantial risk for HIV and meet the clinical eligibility criteria will be eligible for PrEP free of charge, dispensed through community pharmacies.

Study commissioned to examine further investment in Beara Brefine Way in East Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Fáilte Ireland has commissioned a study to examine the potential for further investment in the Beara Brefine Way walking trail which runs through East Galway.

The Beara Brefine Way is Ireland’s longest national way-marked trail and runs from Cork to Cavan, passing through East Galway from Portumna to Ballygar.

It follows the legendary fourteen-day march taken by Dónal Cam O’Sullivan Beare and his one thousand supporters in 1603.

Galway East Deputy Anne Rabbitte says Fáilte Ireland will now conduct a study which will examine the existing trail in areas including wayfinding and signage and proximity to key villages and towns.

Fianna Fail Deputy Rabbitte says the study could greatly improve the reach of tourism in East Galway.


Education Minister confirms building extension at Presentation College Headford

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Education Minister Joe McHugh has confirmed Presentation College Headford will get a major new extension to meet growing pupil numbers.

The school, which has experienced an increase in pupils numbers year on year, now accommodates over 800 students.

To date a number of prefabricated buildings have been used in lieu of permanent classrooms but these are no longer considered fit for purpose.

Minister McHugh confirmed to East Galway Minister of State Ciaran Cannon this week that the Headford project would go ahead.

Minister Cannon says progress is being made by the board of management at Headford Presentation.

Fáilte Ireland announces major investment for new ‘Atlantic Museum Galway’

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Fáilte Ireland has announced plans to develop a new maritime museum on the site of the current Galway City Museum at the Spanish Arch.

Over 6.6 million euro will be invested into the new ‘Atlantic Museum Galway,’ which will celebrate the role the Atlantic ocean has played in shaping Galway.

The investment is the largest to date by Fáilte Ireland for a tourist attraction under the current funding infrastructure and is expected to boost tourism numbers in the region.

The announcement is being made at a launch in the Galway City Museum this morning by Government Chief Whip and Galway West TD Seán Kyne.

Minister in city to discuss funding crisis facing Galway County Council

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Minister for Local Government is in the city this morning to discuss a funding crisis facing Galway County Council.

It’s long been argued by local politicians that Galway is chronically under-funded compared to other local authorities nationwide – to the tune of several million euro.

Despite having the second biggest geographical area in the country, Galway has the fourth lowest funding per capita.

Roads funding has been raised as a particular issue – with the poor state of the county’s road network often used as an example of the need for greater resources.

Junior Minister John Paul Phelan is now in the city this morning to meet with County Councillors to discuss the situation.

Plans revealed for 10 million euro Atlantic Museum for Galway city

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Fáilte Ireland has announced plans to develop a new 10 million euro Atlantic Museum to complement the Galway City Museum at the Spanish Arch.

It will celebrate the role the Atlantic ocean has played in shaping Galway’s culture

The investment is the largest to date by Fáilte Ireland for a tourist attraction and is expected to boost tourism numbers in the region.

The announcement was made at a launched in the Galway City Museum this morning by Government Chief Whip and Galway West TD Seán Kyne.

The project includes the construction of a new three-storey building over the seagate on the Spanish Arch and renovations to the adjoining Comeford House.

Minister announces €1m to tackle funding crisis at Galway County Council

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Minister for Local Government has announced an allocation of €1m towards tackling a funding shortfall at Galway County Council.

Minister John Paul Phelan has made the commitment at a special meeting currently underway at County Hall.

Speaking before the meeting – which is being held with County Councillors and the Council Executive – Minister Phelan admitted that the local authority has been historically under-funded.

Local politicians have long-argued that Galway is chronically under-funded compared to other similarly sized local authorities nationwide – to the tune of several million euro.

Minister Phelan has now announced an extra €1m in funding to tackle the situation – and has further advised that planned changes to the national Local Property Tax system will offer increased funding into the future.
