Final set for Ryder Cup course at The K Club

36 qualifiers from around Ireland to take part

Unique opportunity for club golfers to compete at All-Ireland level

With the introduction this year of the GUI All-Ireland Gold Medals, club golfers have a unique opportunity to participate at individual level in an all-Ireland GUI event. Spread across three different handicap categories, the competition is open to all club members and entry is free for all affiliated golf clubs.

The GUI All-Ireland Gold Medals consists of three stages:

First, each entered club nominated one of their singles competitions as a club qualifier. Entrants on the day competed in one of three handicap categories – 9 and below, 10-17 or 18 and over. The best nett score in each category qualified for the regional final.

Four regional finals were held throughout Ireland in August, with all club qualifiers playing for a place in the All-Ireland Final. The best three scores in each category in each provincial final advanced. (36 golfers in all).

The All-Ireland Final of the event takes place at The K Club on Tuesday 8th October 2019, with the Palmer Course being used for the event.

Sharon Smurfit, Director of Golf at The K Club said: “I, along with my team are honoured that The K Club is hosting the inaugural 2019 All Ireland Gold Medal Final on our Ryder Cup Course. We look forward to welcoming the all-Ireland finalists to what will be a thrilling end to this new competition. The Ryder Cup course has hosted many special events including the Ryder Cup in 2006 and more recently the Irish Open in 2016, so the finalists will have a challenging day here in October. We are delighted to work alongside the GUI in hosting this All Ireland Final and I wish all the competitors the very best of luck in their qualifying rounds.”

2019 Gaelic4Mothers & Others National Blitz Day Is The Biggest And Best Yet!

OVER 2500 women descended upon the Naomh Mearnóg and St Sylvester’s GAA Clubs in Dublin last Saturday (October 5) for the 2019 Gaelic4Mothers&Others National Blitz Day.

The massive attendance made this year’s event the biggest and best yet, with 120 clubs making the trip to north Dublin for a jam-packed day of football, fun and musical entertainment.

The Blitz day was completely recreational, with all players and mentors asked to play in a fun and ‘fair play’ manner.

This was a day for camaraderie, not competition, and no scores were recorded.

At this massive family-orientated event, the festival atmosphere was simply electric and after we asked teams to bring supporters, they responded in their droves.

2FM were also there, and Bokwa Ireland were on hand to oversee another memorable mass warm-up, one of the real highlights of the day.

After the football, participants and supporters enjoyed live entertainment, while a number of exhibitors took the opportunity to avail of the Exhibition Village on site.

Once again, the LGFA was fully subscribed, and with a large number of teams on a waiting list.

The Gaelic4Mothers&Others programme is having a massive impact all over the country, with new clubs sprouting up at a phenomenal rate.

The LGFA would like to thank all players, coaches, officials, Lei and crew from Bokwa Ireland and the 2FM Broadcaster for making this day such a great success once again.

We would also like to extend a special word of thanks to our magnificent hosts at Naomh Mearnóg and St Sylvester’s, who ensured the smooth running of the annual event, while the many volunteers present gave freely and selflessly of their time.

Despite inclement weather conditions, the 20 pitches were in immaculate condition and great credit is due to both clubs for ensuring that this was the case.

The Gaelic4Mothers&Others initiative is an innovative way to introduce mothers and other women to playing Ladies Gaelic Football.

Mothers often drop their kids to training and call back to collect them, but the Ladies Gaelic Football Association is endeavouring to change that.

The Gaelic4Mothers&Others initiative see women playing Ladies Gaelic Football in a fun, non-competitive and social environment.

Gaelic4Mothers&Others provide an opportunity for women to get their recommended weekly exercise in a fun way while meeting other mothers in the area.

The initiative has proved hugely popular with women of all ages and has taken off in all 32 counties with success stories popping up all over the country.

There is one provincial blitz organised in each province every year and the National Blitz day, which was once again a resounding success.

All 3 Galway Hurling Manager nominees withdraw from selection process

$

Galway Bay FM Sport understands that all three candidates nominated for the Galway Senior Hurling Managers position have all decided to withdraw from the process to select the new manager. Outgoing selectors Noel Larkin (Meelick/Eyrecourt) and Francis Forde (Turloughmore), along with Tony Ward (Sarsfields) were the three names in the hat.

On Monday, former Galway Senior Camogie & Galway U21 hurling manager Tony Ward indicated that he was not going forward to the Interview process and now comes the news that both Noel Larkin and Francis Forde have also pulled out of the race to become Senior manager. Interviews with the candidates had expected to be set up imminently but this decision by the three nominees to withdraw will serve to both elongate the process to find a successor to Micheal Donoghue as well as adding further scrutiny to the fallout since the departure of the 2017 All Ireland winning manager.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway West TD says further funding must be secured in a bid to combat illegal dumping in the city and county.

Fine Gael TD, Hildegarde Naughton has met with Minister for Communications, Climate Action and the Environment, Richard Bruton along with other local representatives to highlight the lack of funding available to local authorities in the area.

The Climate Committee Chairperson argued that while the Government doubled the funding under one anti-dumping initiative to €3m nationally this year, the problem still remains.

Deputy Naughton is calling for an increase in the Government enforcement measures grant to ensure that national waste legislation can be enforced…

Galway Bay fm newsroom – An appraisal on a possible extension of the Western Rail Corridor is set to be presented to the department of transport by the end of the month.

The financial and economic appraisal has been devised to establish if the proposed extensions to the corridor from Athenry to Tuam and from Tuam to Claremorris represent value for money.

EY-DKM Economic Advisory was hired in June to undertake the appraisal and public and stakeholder consultation.

Iarnród Éireann received over 600 submissions as part of the public consultation process which closed in July.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The pesticide MCPA has been detected in the Tully-Tullycross public water supply in Connemara following a year of clear sampling results.

While the levels detected do not pose any immediate risk to health, Irish Water has issued a warning stating it’s imperative that users of pesticides are mindful of best practice when spraying their lands.

The Tully-Tullycross supply was on the Environmental Protection Agency’s watch list for pesticides due to persistent exceedances for MCPA.

However, following a year of clear sampling results, the file was removed, but the EPA has notified Irish Water that it will be put back on its watch list following this latest exceedance.

The utility is warning that great care must always be taken to protect drinking water supplies wherever pesticide use is considered necessary, particularly if using products for grassland weed control.

MCPA, which is commonly used to kill rushes on wet land, is the main offender.

While there is no threat to public health, the detected levels sometimes exceed the legally permitted limit value for pesticides in drinking water.

This is set at an extremely low value equivalent to one drop in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Irish Water is appealing to all users of pesticides including the farming community, sporting organisations and domestic users, to ensure that best practice measures to protect drinking waters are always followed.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Works at Cloonboo junction on the N84 are expected to improve safety for pedestrians and road users at the heavily trafficked intersection

The project will involve the construction of new footpaths and a stone wall at Cloonboo Cross.

It’s expected to cost 30 thousand euro and is co-funded by Galway County Council and the local community group Cloonboo Tidy Village.

Cloonboo Tidy Village has raised over three thousand euro for the works, while a local landowner has donated a portion of land to the scheme.

The project was approved under the Community Involvement and Roadworks Scheme and will see footpaths laid on both sides of the L2129 junction off the N84 main road.

Local Independent councillor James Charity says the project will make the junction safer for road users and pedestrians..
