Justice Minister suggests Garda superintendent could remain in Clifden

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Justice Minister has offered hope that the position of Superintendent in the Clifden Garda District will not be scrapped as was indicated this week.

It’s after a meeting of the County Joint Policing Committee suggested that Superintendents will no longer be stationed in Clifden or Tuam due to a new divisional model being trialed.

However, a Dáil reply appears to leave the possibility of a Superintendent being located in Clifden open.

Reduction in offences for motorists without insurance in the county

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Speeding and driving without insurance offences have decreased in the county according to the latest garda figures.

At a meeting of the County Joint Policing Committee, the garda report shows a decrease of 44 per cent in speeding detections in the county in the first 6 months of this year, compared to the same period in 2017.

There was a 38 per cent decrease in the number of offences for driving without insurance and a 10 per cent drop in the number of drink driving detections.

Committee member, Councillor Seosamh O’ Cualain says that people who abide by the law are not rewarded and that motor insurance premiums are now astronomical.

He said his own car insurance has increased by 75 per cent in the past few years.

Chief Superintendent Curley says the reduction in speeding and driving without insurance in the county is partly due to increased checkpoints

Motorsport Ireland Weekend Roundup

Meath driver Cian Carey, a former Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year, had a great weekend at Oulton Park in Cheshire, taking first and second places in the British Formula 3 Cup series rounds, leaving him in the championship lead after the opening four race meetings.

Carey started both races from pole position, leading race one all the way to take his fourth victory this year. However, he got too much wheelspin at the green light for race two, slipping back a few places, and he couldn’t quite regain the lead before the chequered flag, having to settle for runner up position.

Kilkenny’s Ian White, the current National Hewison Trophy Autotest champion, made it five wins in a row as he extended his unbeaten record in this year’s Premier Auto Parts Munster series yesterday in the Killarney event at Millstreet.

However, a maximum penalty for White on one of the twelve tests made for a close finish, with Corkman Liam Cashman only three seconds behind at the end.

RESULTS NATIONAL ROAD SERIES R4 – McCrystal and Moore Win, Donegan and Hennebry Lead Overall

PROFESSIONAL triathlete Aine Donegan has taken the lead in the Cycling Ireland National Road Series Women’s standings, after finishing second in Sunday’s very wet Mullingar GP in Multyfarnham.

In her first season of road cycling, Donegan has now made the podium three times in the National Road Series, last weekend sprinting for second behind new Irish National Road Race Champion Eve McCrystal.

That placing elevated the 29-year-old from second to top the National Road Series table with 125 points, defending champion McCrystal five points adrift in second and former leader Katharine Smyth now third, after puncturing at the end of the first lap on Sunday.

McCrystal was winning for the first time in the Irish National Road Race Champion’s jersey and for the third successive round in the series – having already won the Donamon GP in Roscommon, and the Donal Crowley Memorial in Blarney.

She said: “I think because it was shorter (68km) it was harder from the start. The first lap it stayed together and on the second lap we upped the pace and six of us got away. That dwindled to four and we worked really well together.

“Coming in to the finish I attacked, and Aine brought me back, which worked out perfectly for me as she went straight to the front and I was able to sit in and wait for the sprint.

She added: “I really wanted to win because I had the Champions jersey on my back. I didn’t necessarily feel any pressure, I’m just so happy to wear it and it was great to win with it on me.”

McCrystal and Donegan had been joined by Sofie Loscher (Sundrive Track Team) and newcomer Isabel Oakes (Smugglers CC) in the winning break, but dropped the pair approaching the finish, McCrystal comfortably powering clear to win, hands aloft.

It was a similar experience for 20-year-old Sean Moore (Team Gerard-DHL) in the Men’s National Road Series event. The Wexford rider came up the final rise with only Conor Hennebry for company, and smoothly pushed clear for the biggest victory of his short career.

He said: “It was a brutal day out on the bike; raining from the gun – a pure hard man’s day.

“The break took a good while to get away, then just coming on to the last lap Mark O’Callaghan and a Swords rider were up the road and I clipped across, and a couple of riders joined us.

“Conor Hennebry got across to us as we went through the finish for the last time, then he attacked and I went with him. We rode to the finish and I settled it in the sprint.”

He added: “This is top of the list for me, it has to be. I’ve got about a million top tens without the win, and this is the first time I’ve got that elusive first place. I couldn’t be happier.”

Hennebry’s second promotes the Viner-Caremark-Pactimo rider to the top of the Men’s overall standings with 105 points. Jamie Blanchfield, who finished 11th, drops to second and the injured Sean Lacey is third. Moore’s win moves him up to fourth place.

There are three rounds left of the Men’s and Women’s Cycling Ireland National Road Series, the next round hosted by Banbridge Cycling Club at the John Beggs Memorial Race on Sunday, August 11.

The overall results of the men’s league can be viewed HERE and the women’s league HERE.

Prize Money Increases to €300,000 for 2018 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby with Greater Distribution and New Incentives

Five-time GAA All-Ireland winning footballer Denis Bastick launched the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby at Ireland’s premiere greyhound stadium, Shelbourne Park on Monday 16 July – joined by 2017 Derby winning trainer Pat Guilfoyle and Leon Blanche of BoyleSports. The Irish Greyhound Derby is the most prestigious race in the Irish Greyhound Calendar and boasts an increased prize-fund of €300,000.

Ireland’s Supreme Greyhound for 2017, Good News claimed the Derby title last year for trainer Pat Guilfoyle in a record time of 29.37 over the 550 yards. The top dog’s astonishing speed equalled over €5,000 per racing second before a packed crowd in Dublin’s Shelbourne Park. ‘A dream come true for me and my family,’ is how trainer Pat Guilfoyle described winning the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby in September 2017.

The 2018 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby sees an increased prize fund of €300,000.  The total jackpot will see a greater distribution as unplaced finalists including semi and quarters will receive a significant increase. Payments will be staggered for heat winners with larger rewards for greyhounds winning later rounds, particularly quarter and semi-finals. A number of new incentives have also been introduced. The last standing UK Greyhound (exc. Northern Ireland) will receive €5,000 (min. 10 entries required) in addition to the €200 payment to assist with travel costs. The last bitch standing will receive €3,000 while €2,000 each will go to last owner trained greyhound and the last syndicate owned greyhound. (Full details on prize money distribution and incentives below).

Speaking at the launch, former Dublin GAA footballer Denis Bastick commented ‘GAA fans attending championship games can cheer on their county’s top dog as the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby will showcase Ireland’s fastest greyhounds from every corner of the country. The excitement will build towards the Derby Final in tandem with the action at Croke Park. I look forward to an exciting six weeks of top class racing at Shelbourne Park.’

Leon Blanche of BoyleSports commented “This is our fifth year sponsoring the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby and we’re delighted to be involved again in such an iconic race. It is fantastic to see the overall prize fund increase to €300,000 with a greater emphasis on rewarding all competitors. As a company we pride ourselves on our continued commitment to Irish sport and we’re looking forward with vigour to what is certain to be another very competitive renewal.”

With a total prize fund of €300,000, the Irish Greyhound Derby is in its 87th year. In 2017 BoyleSports, Ireland’s largest independent bookmaker signed a three sponsorship deal with the Irish Greyhound Board which will deliver €1 million in prize money to greyhound owners, breeders and trainers.

IGB Chairman Phil Meaney commented ‘We have seen some of the world’s best greyhound racing at Ireland’s premiere track – Shelbourne Park for over 90 years. The BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby is viewed by a global audience each year and I want to thank BoyleSports for their continued support. The prize money increase will create a more attractive package and will result in a better distribution for all within the racing community.

The Irish Greyhound Derby begins on Friday 17 August in Shelbourne Park Greyhound Stadium in Dublin. The Final of this highly anticipated event will take place on Saturday 22 September 2018. Both the Semi-Final and Final will be broadcast live on RTÉ 2 and online to a worldwide audience on RTÉ website and RTÉ Player.  For information on the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby visit www.gogreyhoundracing.ie.

Brandon’s Final Round In Scotland Tees Up €15,000 Winner In Galway

Stunning Golf Bet Smashes Odds Of 500/1

Brandon Stone shot a course record round of 60 to claim the Scottish Open on Sunday, but little did he know his victory sparked scenes of jubilation on the streets of Galway.

A punter from the County had placed an audacious €25 each-way bet on the South African in a BoyleSports shop at mammoth odds of 500/1.  The odds looked justified after a level par opening round of 70 at Gullane left Stone languishing below the cut mark which eventually fell at -3. But he recovered on Friday before going into the final round with a three shot deficit.

Stone then bulldozed his way through the field on Sunday, missing a putt on the 18th green to become the first player in history to shoot a round of 59 on the European Tour. His four shot victory meant the 500/1 betting slip was now worth a grand total of €15,050 to its owner.

The staggering payout saw the County Galway native pocket more from the Scottish Open than some of the field, with Graeme McDowell walking away with just under €15,000 for his -3 total over the four days.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Brandon Stone was showing no signs of form going into the Scottish Open and had missed the cut twice in the last three weeks, so we don’t know what possessed our Galway customer to have so much confidence in him at 500/1.”
