Mid-Galway water treatment plant back in operation

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Irish Water has issued a statement in the past few minutes to confirm the Mid-Galway water treatment plant is back in operation this evening.

The utility says the plant is pumping at maximum rate – but while some areas have had their supply restored, others are still experiencing disruption.

It’s advising that those areas without supply will have to wait until sufficient supply builds up in the reservoirs which may take some time.

Areas affected by disruptions since this morning due to an electrical fault at the plant include Abbeyknockmoy, Annagh, Laragh, part of Athenry, Monivea, Attymon, Kiltullagh, Gurteen and Carrabane.

Afternoon water restrictions may be imposed on Inis Mor

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There is only enough stored rainfall water on the Aran island of Inis Mór to supply the population for a little more than a fortnight.

That’s according to Irish Water, which is urging residents, businesses and visitors to the Aran Islands to conserve water as afternoon restrictions may be introduced in the near future.

Met Eireann is forecasting further drought conditions for the foreseeable future.

Irish Water says the demand for treated water on Inis Mór is extremely high at 580 cubic metres per day.

It says there is only enough volume of stored rainfall left on the island to supply for 17 days and the boreholes which supplement supply are in danger of being exhausted.

Night time restrictions on Inis Mór and Inis Oírr will continue from 8p.m to 8a.m daily with a further afternoon restriction likely to be introduced if the drought continues.

A hosepipe ban remains in place across the country until the end of July and Irish Water says it will take sustained rainfall over weeks or months to replenish raw water levels.

Meanwhile, the Mid Galway Water plant is back in operation after a fault yesterday.

Most areas saw their water supply return last night but small isolated pockets are still awaiting a full return of the water supply.

Irish Water says works are continuing on the network to release airlocks and bring all booster pumps back fully in line.

NATIONAL ROAD SERIES: Preview of Round 4 – Mullingar GP – 15th July

NEW Irish National Road Race Champion Eve McCrystal will on Sunday race for the first time in the Champion’s jersey at round four of the Cycling Ireland National Road Series in Multyfarnham, County Westmeath.

The Garda CC rider denied a stellar cast of domestic stalwarts and professionals to stand on the top step at the Irish Road Racing Championships last month in Coollooney, County Sligo.

In a proud moment for the Dundalk woman, McCrystal sprinted to beat European Track Championships silver medallist Lydia Gurley, professional Alice Sharpe and Individual Time Trial National Champion Kelly Murphy, with National Road Series leader Katharine Smyth (Ballymena Road Club) back in 5th.

Newcomer Aine Donegan (Scott-Orwell Wheelers) finished 7th, alongside former National Road Race Champion Lydia Boylan, signalling the triathlete’s continued progression towards the top tier of Irish cycling.

McCrystal, Smyth, and Donegan are expected to line up for the Grange Motors Mullingar GP in Multyfarnham on Sunday, Smyth’s team mate Eileen Burns joining her after also making the top ten in the National Road Race and Time Trial Championships.

Men’s National Road Series leader Jamie Blanchfield (Panduit Carrick Wheelers) achieved his highest National Road Race placing, finishing 20th, but 12 other domestic riders also made the top 20, headed by U23 National Champion Darnell Moore, who finished second.

The Mullingar GP also sees the homecoming of County Westmeath’s Ras Tailteann Irish County Team Overall Classification winners – Viner-Caremark-Pactimo – though the team will be without Matteo Cigala.

The Italian transferred to Yorkshire-based team Holdsworth Pro Racing after last month’s Donamon GP in search of more international opportunities. He remains based in Ireland and continues to target overall victory in the National Road Series, presently sitting in third, 25 points off Blanchfield’s lead.

The Men’s and Women’s National Road Series races will set out on the hilly 34km circuit from Multyfarnham at 11am, the Men’s field covering four laps for 136km, and the Women’s three laps for 102km, both races finishing back in the town.

Sign on closes at 10.30am in the Multyfarnham Community Centre, with a full programme of youth and lower category senior races supporting the Cycling Ireland National Road Series Round 4.

The first episode of AIB’s eagerly anticipate new series, The Toughest Rivalry, airs today. The series introduces renowned Premier League Manager Harry Redknapp and former Sampdoria, Juventus and Italy striker, manager and World Footballer of the Year in 1995, Gianluca Vialli to the culture of GAA in Ireland.

Both Premier League powerhouses will take charge of two rival GAA clubs. Vialli with Erin’s Isle in Dublin, and Redknapp with Castlehaven in West Cork. The two teams faced off in an infamous 1998 AIB GAA All-Ireland Club Semi-Final, where Castlehaven were defeated by a last-minute questionable goal. The controversial ending left both teams with unfinished business.

Episode 1 is now available to view here: https://youtu.be/GiTIrRcJYUU

The series will culminate in an epic rematch, set to take place at the end of the summer with Vialli and Redknapp managing their teams and using their managerial expertise to improve and make a difference to their respective teams.

AIB, proud sponsor of both Club and County, believe that GAA, as #TheToughest sport of all, is built upon rivalries be they local, county, provincial or national. GAA rivalries, despite being as intense as any in world sport, are rivalries of the very best kind. These rivalries bring out the very best in GAA players, fans and their communities.

Over the next eight weeks AIB’s exclusive eight-part video series will reveal how Harry and Gianluca fared as they swapped their soccer managerial skills for those of a GAA manager.

This week the two managers travel to their respective destination and get to grips with the task ahead.

AIB’s ‘The Toughest Rivalry’ will air each Friday on www.youtube.com/aib and AIB’s other social channels.

For exclusive content and behind the scenes action from Harry and Gianluca’s journey follow AIB GAA on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and facebook.com/AIBGAA.

Cobh Ramblers vs Galway United

St. Colman’s Park

Saturday, July 14th. Kick-off: 7.45pm
Galway United travel to St. Colman’s Park on Saturday evening to face Cobh Ramblers.
Alan Murphy began his tenure as Galway United manager with a 4-1 win against Athlone Town at Eamonn Deacy Park.
Goals from Conor Barry, Carlton Ubaezuonu, Eoin McCormack and Ronan Manning sealed the morale-boosting win.
Attentions now turn to Saturday’s league meeting at St. Colman’s Park.
The teams are separated by 5 points in the table and both will be anxious to pick up ground on the play-off berths, with four teams above them going head-to-head this weekend.
ALAN MURPHY WANTS MORE OF THE SAME AT ST. COLMAN’S PARK
“Cobh is traditionally a difficult place to go,” Murphy explained to www.galwayunitedfc.ie.
“They’ll be on the crest of a wave after beating a really in-form Longford team last time out.
“We need to concentrate on our own performance and we have to prepare well for the game. We just need to focus on ourselves. We’ll be going down and we’ll be very positive and looking to win the game.
“We’ll be looking to win the battle firstly and obviously then to play the game in the right way.
“Last time out was against Athlone, the result aside, I thought the performance was good. That was the main thing.
“If the performances come in, the results will be a byproduct of that. We’re using it as momentum going forward.”
TEAM NEWS
Alan Murphy received some disappointing news this week. Conor Layng damaged his cruciate ligament in an under-19 game against Cabinteely and will be sidelined for the rest of the season.
Maurice Nugent (ankle) and Mikey Whelan (hamstring) are also ruled out of the trip to St. Colman’s Park.

Galway bay fm newsroom:

Emergency services have been forced to close the Barna to Moycullen road again as a gorse fire has reignited in the Truskey West area.

It’s the latest in a series of flare-ups that have seen the road closed several times in recent days.

Niamh Delmer has more details:

At around half past 3 this afternoon, several units of Galway Fire Brigade returned to the scene of a gorse fire a mile or two north of Barna.

It’s the latest in a series of flare-ups that have affected the site since a major blaze erupted near the village on Tuesday.

While the fire was contained earlier this week, fire crews say difficult conditions make it extremely challenging to fully extinguish the fire.

As a result, there’s been a series of re-ignitions and flare-ups since Tuesday that have seen the Barna to Moycullen road closed a number of times.

The road is now closed again this evening to facilities emergency services and motorists are once again advised to avoid the area if possible.

Heavy smoke is present in the area and local residents are being advised to close their windows and doors while the incident is being dealt with.

However, emergency services say there is no current threat to commercial property or residential areas.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Emergency services spent a number of hours overnight tackling a re-ignited gorse fire north of Barna.

A major blaze erupted at Truskey West earlier this week – and while it has since been contained, there have been a number of flare-ups in recent days.

Fire crews have been called to the site – one or two miles north of the village – countless times since Tuesday.

They say difficult conditions make it extremely challenging to fully extinguish the fire.

A significant incident last evening led to a heavy presence of smoke which saw the Barna to Moycullen Road once again closed for a time.

Fire crews conducted ‘dampening’ operations throughout the night and the road has since re-opened.

The biggest ever Irish Rowing Championships to take place on the island of Ireland got off to a fantastic start on day one of the three-day regatta at the National Rowing Centre in Farran Wood, Cork.

Athletes from more than 60 clubs from all four provinces raced down championship course on Inniscarra Lake where the standard of competition was impressively high across each category.

Outstanding performances came from University College Cork who won the men’s coxed Club 8s in an incredible race, beating UCD into second place by less than one second, leaving Neptune A crew in third.

UCD also impressed, winning the men’s senior coxless four with three members of the Irish under 23 team – David O’Malley, Shane Mulvaney and Andrew Goff – in the boat. They beat Commercial A into second place and NUIG took third.

Skibbereen RC brothers Jake and Fintan McCarthy, who will also represent Ireland at the U23 World Championships at the end of this month, won the men’s senior doubles  andFionn Crowley of Castleconnell Boat Club won the men’s senior single sculls. He beat KealanMannix of Skibbereen RC by two seconds, leaving Aodhan Burns, also of Skibbereen in third.

At junior level, Shandon Boat Club rowed a phenomenal race winning the men’s junior 8 for the first time in the history of their club, beating Enniskillen Royal Boat Club into second place, while Brian Spelman of St. Michael’s RC won the men’s junior single sculls.

Among the women, Castleconnell Boat Club rowed a nail biting race with ColaisteIognaid, who led for the majority of the race in the women’s junior coxless fours, until Castleconnell pushed through to cross the finish line two seconds ahead.

NUIG gave a strong performance in the Women’s intermediate 8, winning by six seconds ahead of Cork Boat Club who were almost 15 seconds ahead of the DULBC A crew.

And Fermoy Rowing Club gave an impressive display in the women’s novice coxed quad, winning by more than 20 seconds ahead of QULBC who were 15 seconds ahead of Neptune.

Irish international rowers Denise Walsh and Aoife Casey of Skibbereen Rowing drew the day to a close with an outstanding performance winning the women’s senior double sculls ahead of Neptune, Skibbereen B and Bann RC respectively.

Race commentator, Gerry Murphy, said all the winning crews deserved credit for their performances. “The standard of racing was very high for all the grades and all the winning crews were deserving winners. They showed their class, coming through to win and it’s a credit to their clubs and coaches, showing that if you put in the work you will reap the rewards of success,” he said.
