Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Taoiseach is in South Galway this evening where he’s touring a number of areas affected by unprecedented flooding in recent weeks.
In an unannounced visit, Enda Kenny arrived in Craughwell at around 3 o’ clock, where he met with residents affected by serious flooding from the Dunkellin River.
The Taoiseach has made his way to Peterswell in the past hour, and he’ll also be visiting Kiltartan, Labane and Kinvara later this evening.
He’s meeting with residents worst affected by the high water levels across South Galway – and he’s listening to proposals from locals as to how best prevent a recurrance.
Galway County Council says the situation in South Galway has stabilised, and water levels are beginning to very slowly recede.
15 to 20 homes remain flooded as Enda Kenny visits the region, while up to 60 people remain isolated by floodwaters across the area.
Some of the worst affected areas include Kilchreest, Cartymor, Tirneevin and Peterswell and pumping is continuing at a number of homes to hold back water.
There’s also a significant amount of flooding in the Meelick and Eyrecourt region, where five to six houses are also cut off by floodwater.
Fine Gael Deputy Ciaran Cannon says the Taoiseach is eager to hear proposals from locals in South Galway on how best to prevent future flooding.
