Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Galway-led Atlantic Diabetes in Pregnancy Service has been awarded 850 thousand euro for a new clinical trial.

Work will begin next month on a trial to establish the effectiveness of the drug Metformin as a treatment for diabetes in pregnant women.

NUI Galway’s School of Midwifery is part of the team conducting the trial in association with the Health Research Board.

The money will also be used to host a national seminar for women with diabetes to focus on the benefits of pre-pregnancy care.

The Atlantic Diabetes in Pregnancy Service is part of the Saolta Hospital Group, and its role is to examine the outcomes of pregnancy for women with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.

Leader of the service, Professor Fidelma Dunne says it’s hoped research such as this can improve outcomes for mothers and babies.
