Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council says the days ahead for South Galway are not looking good – and flooding in the area may not be resolved for a number of weeks.
Water levels across the region have risen overnight following heavy rainfall, as crews desperately battle to keep water out of homes.
Additional soldiers and a Defense Forces helicopter have been deployed to assist Council Crews and the Civil Defense in bolstering flood defences.
It’s hoped that rainfall over the coming days will lessen, and grant respite to the crews working around the clock to hold the water back.
Up to 30 homes remain under threat from floodwaters, while up to 10 homes have already been overwhelmed by the rising water levels.
Most of those homes are in the Kiltartan, Peterswell, Skehanagh, Cahermore and Tirneevin areas.
Many locals roads remain impassable across South Galway – particularly south and west of the N18, and motorists are advised to stick to main routes.
Director of Services Liam Gavin says at the moment, things are not looking good for South Galway.
