Status yellow wind warning in place for Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A status yellow wind warning is in place for Galway until 1 this afternoon.

It also covers counties Mayo, Clare, Cork and Kerry.

While the latest wind warning expires at 1pm today Storm Frank, the sixth storm to hit Ireland this month, is expected to batter the west coast from tomorrow bringing heavy rainfall.

However, there will also be heavy rain today with a risk of flooding but some dry intervals in places during the morning also.

There are fears heavy rain lead to the evacuation of several homes in the Labane area.

Local county councillor Michael Fahy says residents have stacked sandbags outside their properties, but fear the rising water table will cause water to enter their homes despite their efforts.

The N18 remains closed today at Labane due to exisiting floods, and diversions are in place.

The army have been assisting the county council with flood relief in Gort over the last few days and are expected to be out and about again today.

The county council is reminding the public this Christmas bank holiday there is an out of hours emergency service number 091 509 069.

Cllr Michael Fahy says we’re getting close to a point where South Galway will have to be called a disaster zone.
