Galway Bay fm newsroom – The City Council has once again deferred its decision on the disposal of Royal Tara land in Mervue pending further debate on the conditions of the disposal.

The issue was discussed at last evening’s meeting of the local authority and has already been deferred several times this year.

Last nights meeting was told that the site has been valued by two different agents at just over half a million euro.

Councillors heard that a developer was also willing to spend quarter of a million euro on re-roofing the protected structure which would be completed by Christmas.

It was understood that the developer stated that it would ‘endeavor’ to create a cultural center at the site as well as 100 residental units – but concerns were raised in the chamber as to the ambiguity of this committment.

Labour Councillor Billy Cameron expressed fear that Tara Hall would end up like Rahoon House – and he said the disposal would reap social, economic and heritage dividends.

Independent Councillor Noel Larkin said the situation is a golden opportunity for Galway City Council and must be supported.
