Galway Bay fm newsroom  – The Office of Public Works has signed off on an environmental review for the Claregalway Flood Relief Scheme.

The process was delayed due to new EU environmental laws which require impact statements to be carried out by the OPW ahead of such works.

The 7 million euro Claregalway scheme was the first flood relief scheme nationwide that required approval under the new EU regulations.

The approval of the review means work can now get underway at the Clare River.

The OPW has already spent 2.5 million euro carrying out some preliminary works in the area.

These include the construction of a flood eye at Claregalway Bridge, the construction of a new bridge at Crusheeny and the removal of silt.

Galway West TD Sean Kyne says the next phase of the works will get underway shortly.
