Galway Bay fm newsroom – Additional gardaí will be deployed in Galway this weekend as part of the Bank Holiday Road Safety Campaign.
8 people have lost their lives in Galway so far this year.
During the bank holiday period in October last year, there were 5 detections for drink driving, 21 for not wearing a seatbelt, 68 for using mobile phones and 154 for speeding.
Gardaí say they will be focusing on these area again this year as well as lights on vehicles and distraction driving.
Regional Traffic Superintendent, Noel Kelly says they will also be focusing on drivers who don’t wear seatbelts.
Superintendent Kelly says that pedestrians also need to take care this weekend.
