Galway Bay fm newsroom – Gardai have released figures showing the top speeds detected on Galway roads over the past seven days.

The move is part of ‘National Slow Down Day’, a major Garda operation taking place nationwide today to urge motorists to reduce their speeds.

Today is National Slow Down Day, and Gardai will be out in force across Galway conducting a major speed enforcement operation in a bid to reduce speed relation collisions.

As part of the campaign, figures have been released showing the top speeds recorded on roads across the county over the past week.

The biggest offender was a motorist tagged on the N66 at Cuscarrick near Loughrea travelling at 75km/h – that’s 50% over the limit of 50km/h.

Meanwhile, on the N83 at Ballymoney in South Dunmore, Gardai detected a motorist travelling at 121km/h in the 100km/h zone.
On the R446 at Oakfield near Cappataggle, where the speed limit is 80km/h, one motorist was clocked at a speed of 104km/h.

Gardai also detected a top speed of 71km/h on the R336 at An Lochán Beag in Inverin – a 60km/h zone.

Gardai will be conducting extra speed checks across the county until 7am tomorrow – and say just a 1% reduction in speed will result in a 4% reduction in the fatal collision rate.
