Galway Bay fm newsroom – Up to 85% of landowners in some areas of the county have spoken out against the development of the Galway to Dublin greenway.

The County Council is currently conducting one-on-one consultations with landowners across Gaway in a bid to establish a route for the amenity.

On average, 65% of landowners in the county are opposed to the development.

The controversial Galway to Dublin greenway was discussed at this week’s meeting of the Athenry/Oranmore district.

Concerns were raised about a questionaire which is being distributed to farmers whose land in along the proposed route corridor.

Some councillors say the survey is a source of confusion, and say landowners are worried that their true feelings about the greenway are not being conveyed.

A report is currently being prepared on the progress to date, and this will be submitted to the government in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, Galway County Council is continuing its consultations with landowners, and has committed to ensuring that their views and concerns are made known at all stages of the process.

Director of Services Liam Gavin told the meeting that despite a high level of opposition from landowners, towns and villages along the proposed route are ‘generally in support’ of the development.

He says the greenway would generate roughly 10-12 million euro in tourism revenue for the county.
