Galway Bay fm newsroom – Contracts have been signed for a one million euro upgrade to the Carraroe water treatment plant.

It follows a high-level meeting between Irish Water, Galway County Council and public representatives to discuss on-going issues with water quality in the area.

Carraroe is currently under a boil water notice due to the outbreak of Cryptosporidium, which is expected to remain in place for the duration of the works.

Sinn Fein Senator Trevor O’ Clochartaigh says Irish Water is hoping to have workers on the ground within weeks – and the overall scheme should be completed in six months.

He says that due to the emergency nature of the works, Irish Water has taken the unusual decision to proceed without planning permission, and apply for retention upon completition.

Senator O’ Clochartaigh says that while it’s a very welcome development, serious questions remain.

Senator O’ Clochartaigh says that Irish Water have ruled out a regional water scheme – which he says is the option preferred by residents.
