Galway Bay fm newsroom – A status orange weather warning has been put in place for Galway as gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour are set to batter the county from tonight.

The alert has been issued for six counties: Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

A seperate snow and ice warning, at status yellow, will also come into effect across the county at 10 o’clock tonight.

MET Eireann says there’ll be average wind speeds of 65 to 75km/h with gusts of up to 130km/h at times overnight in exposed areas – especially along the coast – leading to high seas.

As a result, it’s issued a status orange weather alert – the second highest on its warning scale.

There’s also a snow and ice warning for Galway and the rest of Connacht, Leinster, Cavan/Monaghan and Donegal.

Heavy snow showers are expected overnight leading to accumulations of up to 3cm in some parts, with larger accumulations likely on higher ground.

Meanwhile, there’s a yellow wind warning for the rest of the country, with gusts of up to 110 kilometres an hour expected across Ireland tonight.

Galway’s weather warnings will remain in place until 9 tomorrow morning.
