Galway Bay fm newsroom – The County Council has refused to give permission to Athenry Livestock Mart to build a mixed-use development.
The Co-op Mart has been refused planning permission to build, shop, office and warehouse space at Prospect.
In refusing permission for the mixed-use development in Athenry, county planners state that it would be premature pending the upgrade of the capacity of the public sewer and town’s wastewater treatment plant.
Planners also feel that it would endanger public safety by being a traffic hazard, with general access to the site off a narrow local road.
Another reason for refusal relates to what planners describe as the ‘lack of clarity regarding the intended retail use’ and that the development would be haphazard and non-integrated with Athenry town centre.
