Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway gardaí have been formally requested to go on point duty at the junction of Quincentenary Bridge and Newcastle Road.

Independent Councillor and Galway West/South Mayo election candidate, Mike Cubbard has requested Galway gardaí to man the junction at peak times, while the traffic lights are not working.

Traffic in the city was at a standstill yesterday (15/2) as a result of extra volumes for the annual Novena and mid-term break for schools.

The control unit at the junction was destroyed during a crash last weekend and a new unit has to be imported from abroad by the City Council.

A spokesperson for the City Council says the new unit should arrive this evening and the installation should begin tomorrow morning.

Depending on the status of the cable work, it’s hoped the lights could be back in action by tomorrow afternoon, however crew won’t know until they begin work in the morning. (Wed)

Councillor Cubbard says motorists are now engaging in illegal manoeuvres at the junction.
