Galway Bay fm newsroom – Camus based dog charity Madra is working to support 34 dogs which it rescued from a farm in county Galway.

Madra took the Border Collie dogs into its care with the assistance of Galway Gardai.

The charity then enlisted the help of collie-specific and other UK rescue groups to assist in the rehabilitation and eventual rehoming of the dogs.

However such efforts were largely impeded due to the COVID 19 outbreak and subsequent lockdown.

Madra is now looking for suitable support homes for the dogs as well as many others it has rescued in recent weeks.

The “Support Homes” programme is designed for dogs that have grown-up on a breeding farming and are not yet ready to become pets.

The initiative is only available to households in quiet rural areas and Madra will set-up such homes with a dog house and access to a trainer.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway 2020 is to implement a three-week temporary layoff programme for all but a skeleton staff, effective from today.

The decision has been taken due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, Galway 2020 says that in response to the unprecedented nature of this crisis, the Board of Galway 2020 has been working in recent days and weeks to make important decisions about the future of the programme.

This has involved close consultation with all stakeholders – the European Commission, the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Galway City Council, Galway County Council, sponsors and all cultural partners.

It adds that it’s hoped this will result in a viable, vibrant but undoubtedly contracted programme of events that will take place later in the year.

Measures to be implemented will involve a three-week temporary layoff programme for all but a skeleton staff, effective from today.

The group is also to end its contract with Artichoke.

The statement concludes that the Board of Galway 2020 will continue to consult with stakeholders in the coming weeks to make longer-term decisions in light of funding and timing constraints and will make a further public statement upon completion of that work.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has assured that State supports will be provided to the Galway 2020 staff who have been laid off.

Earlier this afternoon, Galway 2020 announced it will implement a three-week temporary layoff programme for all but a skeleton staff, effective from today.

The decision has been taken due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, Culture Minister Josepha Madigan says Galway 2020 has been deeply impacted by the restrictions in place to combat the spread of Covid-19.

She says she is disappointed that Galway 2020 will not proceed to the scale envisaged but adds that the team and cultural partners will do their utmost to deliver as much of the programme as possible when public health guidelines permit them to do so.

In relation to the three-week layoff programme, Minister Madigan assures that all relevant State supports will be provided to the workers affected.

Meanwhile, Galway 2020 says the decision has been made in response to the unprecedented nature of the coronavirus crisis, and it’s hoped it will result in a viable, vibrant but undoubtedly contracted programme of events that will take place later in the year.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The CEO of Galway Chamber of Commerce has called on Galway 2020 to seek an extension to get projects through the first half of 2021.

Kenny Deery argues the project still has the potential to leave a lasting legacy for years to come.

It comes as Galway 2020 has this week implemented a three-week temporary layoff programme for all but a skeleton staff due to the significant impact of the coronavirus lockdown on events and social gatherings.

The group says it hopes to deliver a contracted programme of events that will take place later in the year.

Kenny Deery says the news is exceptionally disappointing after the momentum had been building across the west since Galway won the bid.

He says there are many organisations lined up and ready to deliver on their committed programmes and a deferral for some projects should be sought for 2021…..

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The number of vacant beds across the Western hospital group is starting to reduce, due to the growing demands of the coronavirus.

Over the past three and a half weeks, there have been vacant beds, but that’s now changing, especially in hospital sites in Portiuncula, Ballinasloe and in Mayo

Chief Executive of the hospital group Tony Canavan says that it’s still working within capacity, and local modelling indicates the virus is not at its peak.

A growing demand is forecasted in coming weeks for ICU beds.

It comes as today the intensive care unit in the Mater Hospital in Dublin is full with most of the patients in the 18 ICU beds being Covid-19 patients.

Tony Canavan says ED admissions at Galwy University Hospitals are also increasing steadily with 140 attendances yesterday but they still have space at this point – to hear more, tune in to Galway Bay fm news on the hour…

Galway West TD Mairead Farrell is concerned about a number of non-essential businesses still operating under the guise of being vital services.

A number of local workers have voiced concerns over their work places remaining open during the coronavirus emergency.

The official guidance from the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation is that the judgement of whether a business is essential is self-assessed.

Deputy Farrell is calling for more oversight to ensure only truly essential workplaces remain open, and that those that do, observe public health guidelines.

She says a process is needed whereby employees can voice concerns and have them investigated.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Gardaí are concerned about speed breaches in County Galway as reduced traffic levels have led to irresponsible driving.

An Garda Síochána has today launched a major operation which will enhance road safety across the country – with a focus on speeding, drink and drug driving and seat belt use.

Galway has been included in the five areas worst affected by speeding this week, which have been revealed as part of the operation.

In one instance on the N6 in Galway, a motorist was reported to be travelling at 95 kilometres per hour in a 50 kilometre zone.

Interim CEO of the Road Safety Authority, John Caufield, is urging motorists to slow down and prevent collisions.

The operation will also work to ensure the public is complying with the travel restrictions introduced as part of the Covid-19 public health guidelines.

Gardaí are reporting increasing numbers of people making non-essential journeys, exercising more than 2km from home and having house parties.

It comes as the Gardaí have been given the power to detain people who refuse to follow the regulations.

Thousands of checkpoints will be in place nationwide from now until midnight on Monday, to ensure people are not making non-essential journeys.

Commissioner Drew Harris says Gardaí will always engage with a member of the public first.
