Galway county council co-ordinates COVID-19 community response forum

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A dedicated community support helpline has been established by Galway County Council to assist at-risk members of the public in accessing non-emergency and non-medical supports during the current public health emergency.

The confidential phoneline service is being established by the new COVID-19 Galway Council Community Response Forum, which includes over a dozen agencies and organisations.

It’s focused primarily on ensuring that vulnerable members of the community or those living alone can access deliveries of groceries, medicine and fuels.

The free phoneline is available Monday to Sunday on 1800 92 88 94.

Two Galway hopefuls in current Seanad panel count

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Counting has recommenced in the 2020 Seanad election, with two Galway candidates hopeful for a seat in today’s panel.

The Agricultural panel count is getting underway around now at the Printworks in Dublin Castle, with 11 seats to be filled.

Former Fianna Fail TD for Roscommon Galway Eugene Murphy and current County Councillor Aisling Dolan are on today’s ballot paper for the Agricultural panel.

Meanwhile, the Cultural and Education Panel filled it’s five seats today with Galway Senator Sean Kyne retaining his seat in Seanad Eireann.

In February, the outgoing Minister and Galway West TD was appointed to the Seanad by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, to fill the vacancy left by the election of a newly elected TD.

Counting is expected to last until Friday, with the Labour panel count set to begin tomorrow.

Several Galway hopefuls still remain on the ballot paper for the upcoming panels.

These include outgoing senator Gerard Craughwell and cllr Pauline O’Reilly in the Labour panel and councillors Ollie Crowe and Pat Hynes on the Industrial and Commercial panel.

Also on that panel is Soc Dems General Election Candidate Niall O’Tuathail.

Cllr Thomas Welby is also seeking election on the Administration Panel.

Finishing out the Galway hopefuls are outgoing senators Ronan Mullen and Alice Mary Higgins who are both looking to be re-elected on the National University of Ireland ticket.

UHG to take part in a clinical trial for the global effort to tackle Covid-19 pandemic

University Hospital Galway is one of two hospitals in Ireland which will next week take part in a clinical trial as part of global efforts to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.

The trial will begin at University Hospital Galway and St Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin

It will test interventions for COVID-19 in critically ill patients, capture the outcomes and analyse data across an international network.

Also expected to take part at a later stage are Beaumont Hospital, Cork University Hospital, University Hospital Limerick and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast

Call to stamp out antisocial behaviour at Monivea Road estate

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There are calls to stamp out alleged incidents of anti-social behaviour at a new social housing development in the Monivea Road area.

Local councillor Noel Larkin argues groups of young children are hanging around back gardens in the neighbouring Mervue area and causing ‘untold levels of stress and anxiety’ for vulnerable and elderly residents.

He argues the minority causing the disruption are in many cases 10 years or younger and verbally abuse those who confront them on their behaviour.

Councillor Larkin says the new development at Radharc na Gréine has less than 20 houses handed over with all families having undergone an induction process led by the city council.

Eugene Murphy elected to Seanad’s agricultural panel following 18th count

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Outgoing Roscommon/Galway TD Eugene Murphy has been elected to the agricultural panel of the Seanad following the eighteenth count.

The former Fianna Fail TD secured 94,661 votes and was deemed elected together with Fine Gael’s Paddy Burke, Tim Lombard and Michael D’Arcy.

Four seats were filled on the panel last night.

Paul Daly, Niall Blaney and Denis O’Donovan all exceeded the quota as well as Independent Victor Boyhan.

A total of 11 candidates from the ballot will be elected with the quota at over 94,000.

Meanwhile it’s expected the first counts from the NUI and Trinity panels will be known in the coming hours.

Report finds rise in property prices in Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom:

Property prices in Galway have risen by €4,000.

The latest report from MyHome.ie reveals a fourth straight quarter increase.

The report for quarter 1 of 2020 shows the median asking price for a property in the county is now €249,000.

That’s an increase of €4,000 from Q4 2019 and €19,000 compared to Q1 2019.

Meanwhile, the number of properties for sale in Galway city decreased by 19.6% in the quarter, and was up 2.2% year-on-year.

The number of properties for sale in Galway on MyHome.ie decreased by 13.3% in the last quarter and was down 2.2% on this time last year.


Two Galway hopefuls monitoring current Seanad panel count

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Two Galway hopefuls are in the running to fill a seat in Seanad Eireann today as counting recommences this afternoon.

Outgoing Senator and city native Gerard Craughwell and current Green Party City Councillor Pauline O’Reilly are both seeking a seat on the Labour Panel.

The panel has eleven seats to be filled, and is open to those with knowledge and practical experience of the Labour sector, including trade unions.

Meanwhile outgoing Minister and former Galway West Fine Gael TD Sean Kyne, who was temporarily appointed to the Seanad last month by Taoiseach Leo Varadker, yesterday won a seat, and became the first person to be elected to the 26th Seanad.

Today, outgoing Roscommon/Galway Fianna Fail TD Eugene Murphy was elected to the agricultural panel of the Seanad following the eighteenth count earlier.

He secured 94,661 votes and was deemed elected together with Fine Gael’s Paddy Burke, Tim Lombard and Michael D’Arcy.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm news, Senator Murphy says he’s honoured to take up the new role in the Seanad.

Still left for decision is the Industrial and Commercial panel with Galway councillors Ollie Crowe of Fianna Fail and Independent Pat Hynes, as well as Niall O’Tuathail from the Soc Dems in Galway, all looking for one of the nine seats available.

Oughterard Cllr Thomas Welby is also seeking election on the Administration Panel which is due to be counted later in the week.

Finishing out the remaining Galway hopefuls are outgoing senators Ronan Mullen and Alice Mary Higgins who are both looking to be re-elected on the National University of Ireland ticket.

The first facility, which has the capacity for around 1,500 people, opens today at Citywest Hotel in Dublin

Ahascragh native Ronán Mullen first person elected to the NUI panel of the Seanad

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Ahascragh native Ronán Mullen is the first person elected to the NUI panel of the Seanad, retaining his long held seat

He was elected on the first count with fellow outgoing Senator Michael McDowell almost reaching the quota.

Fine Gael’s Jerry Buttimer has been elected on the first count for the Labour panel this afternoon

18 of the 49 seats available have been filled as counting continues this afternoon.

Former Galway West Fine Gael TD Sean Kyne was elected to the first seat yesterday through the Cultural and Education panel, while former Roscommon Galway Fianna Fail TD Eugene Murphy was elected to the Agricultural panel this morning.

Counting continues at The Printworks in Dublin, with more Galway hopefuls anxiously monitoring the results from afar, due to Covid-19 restrictions. For the latest, tune in to Galway Bay fm news on the hour…

Mayor of Galway launches art competition for children staying at home for Covid-19

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Mayor of Galway, Mike Cubbard, has launched a new initiative for children stuck at home amid the coronavirus shut down.

Galway children are being asked to get creative and make a piece of art for a special competition.

The contest is open to anyone up to 18 years and each artist must include the word “Galway” in their entry.

All the interested artists need to do is to draw, colour or design a piece and send a picture of it to mcubbard@yahoo.com, with their name and age included.

The creations will be posted to social media throughout this week and on Friday the winners will by drawn from five different age categories.

Mayor Cubbard says he hopes it will be a fun way for children to entertain themselves at home.

Galway TD highlights importance of the Dáil continuing to sit during Covid-19 pandemic

Galway Bay fm newsroom – It’s vital that Dáil Eireann continues to sit during the coronavirus emergency.

That’s according to Galway West Independent TD Catherine Connolly who says it’s paramount that the government be held to account given the the recent emergency legislation passed by the Dáil recently.

The Independent TD says the Dáil is now the only forum where TDs can raise questions and draw attention to issues faced by constituents now that parliamentary questions have been suspended.

Meanwhile, The Labour Party says it won’t attend tomorrow’s planned Dáil sitting.

The party believes TDs should not be gathering at all, as it’s for non-essential business.

Deputy Connolly has raised concerns over Labour’s comments and says the Dáíl must sit tomorrow while adhering to social distancing guidelines – to hear more, tune in to FYI Galway@5…

14 more deaths from Covid-19 in the Republic, bringing total to 85

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has today been informed that 14 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in Ireland have died.

·        10 deaths located in the east, 4 in the South

·        The patients included 7 females and 7 males.

·        8 patients were reported as having underlying health conditions.

There have now been 85 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland.

The median age of deaths in Ireland is 82.

2 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Galway, bringing total to 88

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has been informed of 212 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland, as at 1pm, Wednesday 1st April.

There are now 3,447 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.

The HSE is now working to identify any contacts the patients may have had to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread.

Today’s data from HPSC, as of midnight, Monday 20th March (2,990 cases), reveals:

·        48% are male and 50% are female, with 134 clusters involving 563 cases

·        Median age of confirmed cases is 48 years

·        834 cases (28%) have been hospitalised

·        Of those hospitalised, 126 cases have been admitted to ICU

·        752 cases (25%) are associated with healthcare workers

·        Dublin has the highest number of cases at 1,645 (55% of all cases) followed by Cork with 255 cases (8%)

·        Of those for whom transmission status is known: community transmission accounts for 60%, close contact accounts for 21%, travel abroad accounts for 18%

Just 2 new cases have been confirmed in Galway, bringing the total to 88.


NUIG Student Union President calls on operators of private student complexes to offer refunds during pandemic

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The NUIG Student Union President has called on the firms behind private student accommodation complexes to offer refunds due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic.

Clare Austick has urged the private operators to refund students who have pre-paid rents for the academic term but are no longer in their accommodation due to the ongoing government restrictions.

It comes as most colleges and universities have agreed to provide refunds for those living in on-campus accommodation.

The NUIG student Union President says co-operation and compassion is needed at this time as students have also lost any form of income through part-time jobs due to lockdown measures….

Over 150 of 650 additional bed capacity allocated to Galway asylum seeker centres

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Department of Justice has confirmed 152 additional beds will be provided to asylum seeker centres in Galway, which is a quarter of the nationwide allocation

It’s in response to the COVID 19 pandemic with a focus on those who may need to cocoon or self-isolate.

Earlier this week, it was announced over 650 beds were to be made available across the country following concerns that HSE guidelines were not being followed in the facilities.

152 of these are to be allocated to Galway asylum seeker centres.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, the Department of Justice says the additional capacity aims to support the measures required for vulnerable residents; the provision of offsite accommodation for self-isolation; and to help with social distancing measures by reducing overall numbers in some existing centres.

Green party council seat to be filled by selection convention following election of City Councillor to Seanad

Galway Bay fm newsroom:

The city council seat left vacant by newly elected Green Party Senator Pauline O’Reilly is to be filled following a selection process among the local party working group.

The former Green party city councillor was deemed to be elected to the 26th Seanad following the 17th count last night with 94,194 votes.

Her council seat will now be filled with a party member following a selection convention among the Galway City West Ward Green Party Group.

Senator O’Reilly says anyone with a history of hard work and who has put in the ground work has a chance to take the vacant seat.
