The Galway senior ladies can move a step closer to another National League final appearance when they host Tipperary on Sunday.

Following an impressive win against Dublin last time out, manager Tim Rabbitt has opted for just one change, with Lauren Diskin replacing Dearbhla Gower in goal.

Galway were the League and Championship bridesmaids last year but they’ve rallied in 2020, and have three wins from four outings in Division 1.

The Tribeswomen took the scalp of Dublin last time out and that result has them on course for another Final appearance, with Mayo three points behind in third.

Galway can strengthen their grip on a top-two placing with victory over Tipperary at Tuam Stadium, but the visitors will travel in good spirits.

Draws with Dublin and Waterford, and victory over Westmeath, have Tipp in mid-table and on course for top-flight consolidation again.

A win on the road here, and the Premier County could think about squeezing into a Final place, although there would be plenty of work still to do.

There’s a switch between the sticks for Galway, while Tipperary are unchanged.

Galway (v Tipperary): L Diskin; C Crowe, S Lynch, S Molloy; C Cooney, F Cooney, L Coen; S Divilly, A Davoren; A Trill, O Divilly, L Noone; L Hannon, T Leonard, R Leonard.

Tipperary (v Galway): L Fitzpatrick; E Moore, L Spillane, E Cronin; M Curley, B Condon, S Lambert; L Dillon, C Kennedy; O Winston, E Morrissey, R Daly; K Davey, A Moloney, N Hayes.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Significant road improvement works will get underway near Kilmeen Cross on Monday, March 9th.

The works – which will last an estimated 3 months – will be carried out on the N65 around 4km outside Loughrea.

Kilmeen Cross has been the source of a long-running campaign in recent years to secure road safety improvement works, as well as the installation of lighting at what locals consider a dangerous accident black spot.

Efforts to secure lighting from Transport Infrastructure Ireland have so far failed to yield results.

However, considerable funding has been announced for road and safety improvement works at the junction in recent months – while safety barriers were installed last November.

The latest 3 month project set to get underway on Monday will be carried out along an 800m stretch of the N65 leading into Kilmeen Cross.

It’ll involve watermain installation, improvement of the road surface, new road markings, drainage and ancillary road works and traffic management measures.

The works will initially start on the hard shoulder on Monday morning with watermain installation.

During the course of the works over the next 3 months, flagmen and stop/go boards will be in place during daytime hours.

Local TD raises concern as people with disabilities face challenge in housing adaptation grant application

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Roscommon-Galway TD has raised serious concern over a new obstacle facing people with disabilities applying for housing adaptation grants.

Housing adaptation grants are allocated to people with disabilities by local authorities across the country to adapt their homes into a disability-friendly environment.

However, according to Independent Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice, the HSE has issued a notice that it will no longer provide Occupational Therapy reports – which are required in the grant application – for free.

Deputy Fitzmaurice says this means those in need of the grant will now have to pay for the report – which he says could cost hundreds of euro.

He says it’s an unnecessary obstacle for vulnerable people.

The campaign, which is still in its infancy, is growing steadily but needs more community support to progress, according group representative Susan McGrady.

University Hospital Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Saolta Hospital Group has issued a statement advising the public that outpatient, X-Ray and other scheduled appointments are going ahead at Galway Hospitals.

It’s as strict visitor restrictions are in place at UHG, Merlin Park Hospital and Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe as a result of ‘infection control measures’ introduced last week.

Saolta says services at all 3 hospitals are not impacted and all clinics and procedures are going ahead as normal.

However, it’s continuing to remind the public not to visit any hospital other than end of life situations and other exceptional circumstances.

It adds that children in particular must stay away from hospitals.

Councillor says many ecological complaints against city ring road “a load of nonsense”

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A City Councillor says many of the ecological complaints being made against the proposed N6 city ring road project are “a load of nonsense”.

Councillor Noel Larkin says everyone is entitled to their opinion and some of the arguments being presented are logical.

However, he claims many others are a “load of nonsense” – such as the argument that the proposed ring road should not proceed as it will destroy limestone pavements along an 18km route.

He says limestone exists in hundreds of areas across Galway, including thousands of acres in Connemara – and a few kilometers for the ring road should not take priority over the needs of Galway City and its population.

Independent Councillor Larkin also argues that claims of the damage to habitats, flora and fauna are greatly exaggerated, and underestimate the proven ability of animals to adapt to changing or new environments.

It’s as an oral hearing on the project is now entering it’s fourth week at the G Hotel.

Councillor Larkin says the ring road’s affect on animals, insects, plantlife and natural features will be minimal and it’s crucial that ‘humans’ are given priority.

He says stopping the bypass would hold back development in Galway by decades.
