Calls on Deputy Noel Grealish to correct Dáil record over claims on money being sent outside state

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There are calls for Galway West Deputy Noel Grealish to correct the Dáil record following a row about money being sent outside the state.

Independent TD Noel Grealish claimed €3.6bn has been sent in personal remittances from Ireland to Nigeria over the past 8 years.

He was citing figures from the World Bank which the Taoiseach has said are suspect and based on estimates and not actual data.

Deputy Grealish is now being urged to correct the Dáil records – after CSO figures confirmed just €17m is sent to Nigeria each year.

Deputy Grealish also called for stricter measures on such transfers and questioned if some of the cash was the proceeds of crime.

His comments have prompted a strong reply from senior Government Ministers – with Simon Harris calling the statements ‘reprehensible’.

Deputy Ruth Coppinger says it’s vital that the Dáil record is corrected – and claims Deputy Grealish deliberately used incorrect figures.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway West TD Eamon O Cuiv has slammed the Government over what he calls a lack of coordination when dealing with third level students living in Rural Ireland,

Students who live within 45 kilometres of their institution receive a much lower maintenance grant then those living further away and get accommodation assistance

Fianna Fáil Deputy O Cuiv says due to this situation such students are expected to continue living with their parents

Deputy Ó Cuív says if the Department of Education continues to make this distinction with the grant, then those living within 45 kilometres of their institution should have access to regular high quality public transport.

He says students in Galway will not be able to stay in college if they have no way home at the end of the day.

Killian Brouder Signs New Contract With Galway United

There was more good news for Galway United supporters with the announcement that Killian Brouder has signed a new contract with the club.
The in-demand defender has rejected a number of offers from Premier Division clubs to extend his stay at Eamonn Deacy Park.

21-year-old Brouder joined United midway through the 2019 season from Limerick and he made an immediate impact on Corribside.
The Newcastle West native made 9 appearances for United in all competitions and he played a key role in the club’s strong finish to the season.

The commanding centre-half scored his first goal for the Tribesmen against Athlone Town on the final night of the season.

Galway United manager Alan Murphy signed the central defender just before the July transfer window closed and Brouder went on to appear in all nine of United’s remaining fixtures in 2019.

“I’m absolutely thrilled that Killian Brouder has signed a new contract with the club. He was a real factor in the development and the resurgence of the team last season,” Murphy said.

“He’s a real physical specimen and visual leader when you look out on the pitch. He’s a really technical defender, who reads the game well and on top of all that, he’s a smashing player and a great guy to deal with.

“We’re lucky to get him over the line, there has been considerable interest in Killian during this off-season. He’s really bought into the vision and ambition that we have for next year. Hopefully, he’ll be a big player for us.

“Killian really gelled within the group last season and enjoyed his football, he’s really looking forward to getting back now and pushing on with the club in pre-season.”

Brouder settled into his new surroundings at Eamonn Deacy Park seamlessly.

The young defender enjoyed his football in the latter half of the season and Alan Murphy’s persistence played a huge part in Brouder extending his stay at the club.

“A big thing about coming back was that I enjoyed last season and I think Alan can get the best out of me,” Brouder explained.

“I came to Galway after a tough season with Limerick, I started off a bit rusty but I found my feet and I really enjoyed my football and that’s the main reason I’m back for 2020.

“Alan has been onto me since the end of the season and he’s told me his plans for the club and I was very impressed by them. I’m still a young player, so I want to be playing as much football as possible.

“When I came to the club, I just felt there was a good group of lads there and I settled in quickly. I did have one or two offers from elsewhere for next year but Alan’s plans for the club really interested me. Last season I got on well with all the lads, I can’t wait to see them again and get going. Hopefully, it’s going to be a big year for us.”

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Taoiseach has been urged to intervene in an emergency staffing issue that could see public health nursing services in Ballinasloe and Portumna close by tomorrow (15/11).

Fianna Fail TD Eugene Murphy has urged Leo Varadkar to personally get involved in the situation to help come to a resolution that would not interrupt services.

Ballinasloe and Portumna PHN services typically have six nurses, but are now facing four vacancies due to maternity leave, resignation and reassignment.

Local PHNs, their managers and the INMO have notified their employers that the service will be forced to shut tomorrow, unless the vacant posts are filled.

Deputy Murphy says the closure of this service will see people presenting for treatment at already overcrowded hospitals.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The INMO has warned that public health nursing services in East Galway will have to be curtailed over the coming weeks due to a severe lack of staff.

Two temporary posts have been sanctioned in a bid to address the emergency staffing issue in the provision of such services in Ballinasloe and Portumna.

It’s after local PHNs, their managers and the INMO notified their employers earlier this week that the service will be forced to shut by tomorrow, unless the vacant posts are filled.

Ballinasloe and Portumna PHN services typically have six nurses, but are now facing four vacancies due to maternity leave, resignation and reassignment.

The HSE has since sanctioned two temporary posts – a community registered nurse post and a public health nurse.

However the INMO has warned the approval has been received too late in the process and services will have to be curtailed until suitable candidates can be found to fill the temporary posts.
