Galway Bay fm newsroom:

The campaign against a Centre that would house asylum seekers in Oughterard is being intensified.

A march in protest against all such centres is set to take place in Oughterard tomorrow morning.

The huge crowd at a public meeting in Oughterard on Wednesay night highlighted a strong mixture of concern and anger about the possible setting up of a Centre for asylum seekers at what used to be the “Connemara Gateway” Hotel.

Now there is another step in the campaign with what is being described as a peaceful march on this Saturday morning again’st all such Direct Provision Centre from the Catholic Church as far as the “Connemara Gateway” Hotel at 11.30 a.m.

Campaign sources also say that leaflets giving the reasons for the concern in Oughterard are being distributed widely as far west as Clifden and into South Connemara.

Refurbishment work is understood to be continuing in the building with reports of security personnel being in place.

While there is no official confirmation, there are suggestions locally that the Center, if it is eventually selected, may be for the intake of men only – especially in the earlier stages.

City council adopts climate change strategy

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Climate Adaptation Strategy for the period 2019 to 2024 has been adopted by Galway City Council.

The Plan will be a template for steps to make infrastructure, buildings and various services in the City more resilient to the effects of climate change in future years.

The Climate Adaptation Strategy set the scene for a wide ranging effort by Galway City Council to afford protection to the City’s population from increasingly serious weather events.

Possible benefits from the changing climate were also outlined in the document presented to City Councillors in a range of areas including tourism and health related issues.

Flood protection in areas of the City that have been vulnerable in the past were among the issues which came to the fore at last evenings meeting in City Hall as well as adaptations needed in building in the future.

However, a document presented to Councillors also highlighted a number of positive elements that could arise from climate change in the region.

The summers could be sunnier and longer, there could be benefits to the tourism industry as people sought more agreeable weather, certain types of flora could flourish and there could be an increased supply of vitamin D which would have significant health benefits in the region.

However, Paul Batty of the City Council in presenting the report said the overall global picture is negativeand threatening.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Three senior government ministers are to visit Galway on Monday to launch a pilot programme focused on the protection of children suspected of suffering sexual abuse.

The Barnahus, Onehouse Galway project is a multi-agency centre for children or adolesents, where they can be interviewed and medically examined.

The centre is designed to minimise the potential for re-traumatisation of young people from repeated interviews by multiple agencies in different locations.

The initiative brings together An Garda Siochana, the HSE and child and family agency, Tusla.

The new Galway project will be launched by Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Dr. Katherine Zappone and Minister of Justice Charlie Flanagan at the ILAS Building at NUIG on Monday.

Huge turnout in Oughterard for protest against direct provision

$

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There was a huge turnout in Oughterard earlier today for a march against direct provision.

Today’s action comes amid ongoing controversy over the potential establishment of a direct provision centre in a former hotel near the village.

Up to 800 people marched through Oughterard this afternoon with placards in a silent procession to highlight their opposition to such a move.

Many are keen to stress that their issue is with the direct provision system itself rather than those seeking asylum – as well as the ‘secrecy’ surrounding the proposal.

It’s also argued by some that Oughterard does not have the infrastructure or services in place to support a large influx of asylum seekers to the area.

Meanwhile, pressure remains on Deputy Noel Grealish to make a statement over comments he made about African migrants at a public meeting in Oughterard on Wednesday.

Galway TD urges government to introduce statutory home care support services

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway TD is urging the government to speedily progress the introduction of a statutory scheme of home care support services.

Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív says the scheme – which was recommended by the Sláinte Implementation Strategy – would legally guarantee homecare packages to those who require them.

He says these packages would allow more people to be cared for at home when they get old or fall ill.

The Fianna Fail TD says the support currently given to home carers is inadequate – with funding for home care amounting to less than 3 per cent of the total health fund.

Deputy Ó Cuív says the government must ensure high quality home care is provided to those that need it.
