GSPCA appeals for funding as resources stretched beyond limit

Galway Bay fm newsroom:

Galway Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says it’s struggling to manage within its existing resources.

Last week the charity took in a litter of kittens which were discovered in a skip by Walsh Waste staff who were collected the skip.

The kittens were only about two weeks old and the GSPCA says it looks like they were dumped in the skip, as they were covered in grit and dirt which meant feeding was a challenge.

The charity says the baby kittens are now much more alert and stable following antibiotics and feeding and have been placed with a foster carer.

Yesterday, the GSPCA says another three kittens were brought into its city charity shop after being found on a street.

Voting on Galway’s islands slow so far

$

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Islanders today have an early say in local and European elections, as well as the divorce referendum.

However, turnout is so far being broadly described as ‘slow’ – particularly on Inis Meain, due to a funeral which many islanders are attending in the city today.

There are just over 1,200 people registered to vote on Inis Mór, Inis Meain, Inis Oirr and Inishbofin.

Today is likely the last time they’ll be asked to vote a day before the rest of the country, as a bill has been passed to allow them to go to the polls on the same day.

Voter turnout is, so far, being described as slow – particularly on Inis Meain, as many residents are in Galway City today for the funeral of an island native.

Overall, 1,030 voters on the Aran Islands fall within the newly created Connemara South constituency; where 11 candidates are contesting 5 seats, including 2 sitting councillors.

While 183 voters on Inishbofin are part of the Connemara North constituency, where 7 candidates – including 4 incumbents – are contesting 4 seats.

They’re also being asked to have their say in the EU elections for the Midlands/North-West, which has just 4 seats to share among 17 candidates, including 3 sitting MEPS.

Voting is also underway in the divorce referendum on Galway’s islands today.

It proposes changes to legislation relating to the amount of time a couple must live apart before applying for divorce, as well as recognition of foreign divorces.

Tusla accepts finds of report into foster home abuse case in Dunmore

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Tusla says it accepts the findings of a National Review Panel into a foster home abuse case in Dunmore.

It relates to the abuse of three girls – who were all under ten years of age – at the home between 2003 and 2007.

The report – which has not yet been published – identifies ‘systemic flaws’ by HSE and Tusla management in their handling of the case.

Last year, some of the women waived their right to anonymity in order to name their abuser as 29 year old Keith Burke of Addergoolemore – who was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison.

Tusla now says a number of important steps are being taken prior to the publication of the report, including engagements with those affected, to ensure their wellbeing and to limit any adverse effects this situation may have on them.

The Child and Family Agency says the report reflects a certain point in time, prior to the establishment of Tusla, which has resulted in an improvement in standards, staffing and services.
