Saolta to submit further information to city planners next week on Merlin Park modular theatres

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Saolta Hospital Group is to submit its response next week to a further information request regarding the long awaited modular theatres at Merlin Park Hospital.

It’s been three years since a leak in the roof caused a theatre closure.

One theatre is now in operation which has led to reduced capacity for orthopaedic elective surgery.

Galway City Council has raised concerns about the ecological impact that the modular build development could have on Merlin Woods and has sought further information.

The project has faced various setbacks after the HSE confirmed in March that it had terminated its letter of intent to the provider of the orthopaedic surgery theatres at Merlin Park.

At this week’s Health Forum meeting, Joe Hoare of Estates West said that an approach to lease the facility and put in a solution didn’t work out and a different approach is now being pursued based on a ‘systems build or rapid build’ capital project approach.

The meeting heard this would involve a combination of off-site and on-site with the foundations built on-site and the structure off-site.

Mr. Hoare said it’s estimated that the main contract itself won’t start until sometime into next year.

Executive urged to conduct full review of parking control bye-laws in city

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway city councillors have called on the executive to conduct a full review of parking control bye-laws, in the interest of clarity.

The emergency motion led by Fianna Fail councillor Ollie Crowe was tabled at the final meeting of the existing city council this week and received the support of 14 members.

The meeting heard that residents in areas including the Claddagh, Bohermore and Woodquay have raised concerns that applications for permits are being turned down in many cases.

These include scenarios where the property has some off-street parking but also requires on-street parking to accommodate the household.

The matter was discussed at a well attended public meeting held in the Claddagh last month (April).

Fianna Fail councillor Ollie Crowe argued there is no consistency in the way the bye laws from 2009 are being interpreted and said there has been a marked reduction in parking permits across the city.

He argued that any change in policy should come before elected members.

Fellow party councillor Peter Keane said there is a very loose interpretation of the existing bye-laws and clarity and definition is required.

CEO Brendan McGrath said he would bring a report on the issue to the next meeting.

Officials stress new ED will be at UHG site while Merlin Park will be focus of new elective hospital

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Saolta officials have stressed that the planned new emergency department at UHG will go ahead regardless of discussions regarding a new hospital at Merlin Park.

The ED was raised at a meeting of the Health Forum West where HSE Estates West Manager Joe Hoare said it has turned out to be a very complex scheme due to the bus corridor and helipad requirements.

The ED would occupy two floors of a new five-storey block which would also include maternity and paediatrics.

The forum heard a meeting has recently been held regarding the maternity section of the block, while there will be a meeting next week on the overall scheme.

Chief Operating Officer Ann Cosgrove told the meeting there should be absolute clarity that the ED block will be happening on the UHG site.

She said Merlin Park will be the site for the elective hospital development.

Officials advised that once the scheme is finalised for the build, the HSE will be engaging with An Bord Pleanala to discuss whether the block will be considered strategic infrastructure or otherwise.

The meeting heard the ongoing appraisal regarding UHG and Merlin Park will be complete by July.

Tuam area councillor Mary Hoade said she had received representations at her clinic that a 95 year old woman had to spend four nights on a trolley at UHG recently.

She argues the overcrowding crisis needs to be addressed as the new ED is unlikely to be complete for a further five years.

Galway United vs Longford Town

Eamonn Deacy Park

Friday, 17th May. Kick-off: 7.45pm

Galway United return to Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday night for an anticipated home game against Longford Town. Kick-off: 7.45pm.

Longford Town have made an impressive start to the season – Neale Fenn’s side currently occupy second place in the league table with a game in hand on leaders Cabinteely.

United’s form has improved over the last few weeks – Alan Murphy’s charges picked up their first home win of the season against Wexford to make it two wins out of three league games.

With one of the form sides in the division coming to Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday night, Alan Murphy is hopeful that his players can build on their recent good form.

ALAN MURPHY – “WE’LL BE GOING INTO THE GAME WITH CONFIDENCE.”

“It’s an excellent game to look forward to and I suppose it’s a real guide of where we are in terms of our performance and the improvements that we’ve made,” Murphy explained to www.galwayunitedfc.ie

“Longford have been the best side in the league this year when you look at their performances and all the indicators of performance, which are goals scored and goals conceded.

“They’ve only conceded three goals in the league which is a phenomenal record. We’re going to be really tested against them.

“We’re on the back of some good performances ourselves and we’ll be going into the game with confidence.

“We want to perform in front of our own home crowd. It’s a big weekend for us with two games in such quick succession, which will mean different players will get chances to impress.”

TEAM NEWS

Conor Layng (cruciate ligament), Andrew Peters (ankle), Jeff McGowan (hamstring) and Adam Rooney (foot) are unavailable.

Second annual Hula Hoops 3×3 Championships to tip off at Bray Seafront this weekend

$

Bray Seafront is the only place to be this coming Saturday, May 18th, as the second annual Hula Hoops 3×3 Championships tips off from 9.30am.

3×3 basketball sees teams play off against each other on the half court for ten minutes, or the first to 21 points. Unlike 5 on 5 basketball, there is just one basket and scores are counted in ones and twos. As the tag line says, it’s half the space but twice the pace!

Last year saw more than 9,000 watch the inaugural Championships at Dundrum Town Centre in an action-packed day that saw DCU Saints and Ambassador UCC Glanmire crowned men’s and women’s champions respectively.

This year’s event is set to be just as competitive, with DCU Saints returning to defend their title and will be led by the formidable pairing of Martins Provizors and Mike Bonaparte. They will be faced with tough opposition though including Templeogue, who come to the tournament fresh off their recent Champions Trophy success and will be led by two Irish internationals and Bray natives, Lorcan Murphy and Neil Randolph as they try to go one step further than last year.

Other men’s teams to watch out for on the day include Abbey Seals Dublin Lions who were recently promoted to the Men’s Super League, KUBS, and Maree who are coming off their best ever Super League season and feature Irish International 3×3 player, Paul Freeman.

In the women’s championship, a new name will be etched on the silverware this year as defending champions Glanmire will not be returning to the main event. There may however be a repeat individual champion as 3×3 Irish international Grainne Dwyer – who won last year with Glanmire – now lines out for Fr. Mathews. Dwyer will be playing alongside fellow 3×3 international star and sister Niamh as they take to the court together once more. Super League and National Cup champions Courtyard Liffey Celtics, will be hoping to add to their Cup and League double this season by capturing the 3×3 title.

They will look to big performances from Irish international 3×3 player Aine O’Connor and young 3×3 international star Ciara Bracken. Other teams to watch out for are Templeogue women’s team who are entering the competition for the first time, DCU Mercy, Pyrobel Killester, IT Carlow Basketball and Ulster University Elks.

Games tip off at 9.30am at Bray Seafront, with admission free on the day. There will also be games and competitions for children to take part in to ensure it’s a fun filled day for all of the family. The final will tip off at approximately 5pm and games can be seen online via Basketball Ireland’s social media channels and on Balls.ie. You can view the full schedule for the day below.

High level meeting over way forward for coastal erosion works at Sailin to Silverstrand

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A high level meeting is due to be held at the end of the month to discuss the long awaited plan for coastal erosion works at Sailin to Silverstrand.

The meeting will involve city officials, the department of housing, planning and local government, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

It comes as concerns have been raised around the validity of the original planning permission.

The long awaited project to tackle coastal erosion received approval from An Bord Pleanala in 2007.

Consultants later recommended a revised scheme which included a reduction in the footprint of the revetments to lessen the overall environmental impact.

A foreshore licence was then applied for to the Department.

A meeting at City Hall last month (April) heard the department now has concerns about the validity of the original permission due to changes in legislation coupled with changes in the footprint of the original design.

It’s linked to a ruling by the ECJ in relation to the Lough Corrib site and the N6 outer bypass scheme.

At this week’s meeting at City Hall, consultants were due to provide a report on a review of the planning approval and the foreshore licence application.

However the meeting heard the RPS report was not yet received due to the complexity of the project.

Independent councillor Donal Lyons urged officials to expedite the matter and argued years have been wasted, while various habitats directives have come in in the meantime.

Fianna Fail councillor Peter Keane said its the single biggest recreation and amenity project in the city in years and stressed his disappointment at the lack of progress.

Director of Services Dermot Mahon stressed the project is not being delayed.

He said there are a number of options and the executive wants to be certain on the exact course of action.

Mr. Mahon said a report on the matter will be presented at the June or July meeting.

Survey reveals 24 thousand people commute to Galway city every day

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A new survey has revealed that 24 thousand people are commuting to Galway city every day.

That’s according to research from Vodafone, based on analytics used to map commuter trends, as well as CSO data.

The statistics collated by Vodafone also show that people are leaving towns and villages for employment, creating an economic drain in rural areas.

The analysis is being published as the communications firm is set to host a workshop in the city next week to explore a range of issues facing SME’s in Galway – including traffic congestion.

Other areas to be explored include remote working, commute times, increased demand for office space and enterprise outside urban centres.

The ‘Smart Business’ workshop will take place at the Portershed on Tuesday morning at 7.30.

Galway golfer sets course record at Irish Amateur Open

By Alan Kelly

Galway Golf Club’s Ronan Mullarney leads the Flogas Irish amateur Open following a new course record 62 at County Sligo Golf Club yesterday. On 9 under par, Mullarney starts his second round at 1.25pm four shots clear of his nearest challenger, with Luke O’Neill from Connemara in a group on 4 under. David Kitt from Athenry is 1 under and Galway Golf Club’s Eddie McCormack is level par.

With nine birdies on his card, a course record 62 and a four-stroke lead at the close of play, the opening day of the Flogas Irish Amateur Open belonged to Galway’s Ronan Mullarney.
By the time he stepped on to the 16th tee, he had just reeled off five birdies in a row. Seamless as it seemed, Mullarney could feel the tension rising as he neared the finish line.

“There’s no point lying, I was nervous coming in there,” Mullarney admitted after signing off on a magical round, the lowest of his career. “I had a nice stretch in the middle from 11 to 15, I birdied them all. I’ve played here a lot. I know the place really well.”

By hitting each green in regulation over the closing stretch, Mullarney kept the stress to a minimum. He finished with three straight pars to set a new mark at Rosses Point, breaking the course record by two shots.

“I don’t like to hide from the fact if I’m going well,” said Mullarney, winner of the Irish Student Championship at Tralee in 2018. “If it comes to the last day and there are a few people following me, I know I’m doing well. There’s no point hiding from it. Hopefully, I have to deal with it at some stage.”
Mullarney, 23, made four birdies in his first nine but his outward tally of 32 seemed modest when set against his homeward run. Beginning at the 11th, he made five birdies on the trot.
By the time he reached the 13th green, the photographers had Mullarney in their sights. He duly holed another birdie putt, his longest of the round, from 40 feet.

“Even the pros say it’s hard to follow a good round,” Mullarney reflected. “I will try my best to take each shot as it comes. Tomorrow is a different day and hopefully, the putts will drop.”
A student at Maynooth University, where he is in the final year of a Master’s in Strategy and Innovation, Mullarney won his first Ireland cap at the Home Internationals last year. Four times he has placed in the top 10 this season, although the omens were troubling him after he teed-off in the opening round.

“I was leading at the Irish Students in Bray a couple of years ago,” Mullarney recalled. “And I said to Pat [Cashman], ‘How am I going?’ He said: ‘When I start to come out, you know you’re doing something well.’ I knew I was going fairly okay then.”
Cashman, golf snapper supreme, had timed his arrival to perfection. Mullarney went on to birdie 14 and 15 before finishing with those regulation pars.

“The whole day didn’t start well,” Mullarney revealed. “I lost my wallet this morning. I forgot my battery leaving the house and I plonked it in the bunker on the first.”
Undeterred, Mullarney plotted his way to an opening par. He holed from 15 feet, completing his up and down from 70 yards. He did not look back.

The Galway man birdied the next two holes from inside 10 feet and, although gaining further ground at the fifth, felt in need of more returns. Charlie Strickland, playing alongside, had already reached five under:  “After the 7th, I was two behind Charlie [Strickland]. That was good. We were kind of feeding off each other. I was thinking that I needed to hole something because he was pulling away.”

By the close, Mullarney was in the clear. He holds a four-stroke lead going into round two.
Three players share second place overnight: Scottish pair Robbie Muir and Euan Walker are locked together with England’s James Newton on five under.

Next best of the home challengers are Connemara teenager Luke O’Neill, who made six birdies in a four-under 67, and Massereene’s Tiarnán McLarnon, who went bogey-free.

Luke O’Neill teed-off this earlier this morning, Galway’s Eddie McCormack is teeing-off at 2:42pm and Athenry’s David Kitt is set to tee-off at 3:04pm

Galway TD challenges Minister in Dail over Mother and Baby Homes

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway TD has challenged the Children’s Minister in the Dáil during a debate on Mother and Baby Homes.

The matter arose during a debate on a private members bill introduced by Deputy Clare Daly.

It called for a wide range of immediate measures and recognitions from the Government – including the establishment of a redress scheme.

Children’s Minister Katherine Zappone tabled a number of amendments – including one which stated it is not feasible to consider any redress scheme until a final report is produced.

In response, Galway West Deputy Catherine Connolly pointed out that a previous interim report clearly identified the need for a redress scheme.

And she accused Minister Zappone of being ‘disingenuous’.

Independent Deputy Connolly also argued that in relation to the Tuam Mother and Baby Home, there are still serious questions to answer. To hear more, tune in to Galway Bay fm news on the hour…
