Galway Masters Start Championship With A Win In London
Galway 1-10 London 1-3
On a day when we had all 4 seasons in one hour, the Galway Masters defeated London in the championship first round. The breeze was a major factor in the first half and Galway led on a scoreline of four points to one at half time. Galway opened the scoring from Padraic De Paor, Galway’s top scorer in 2018 season followed by a point from Vice Captain Jason Kearns. Derwin Costello added another point and Galway finished off the half with a well-taken score from Sean Kenny. London finished the half with just the one score but had a missed opportunity to level the match midway through the first half when the goal chance was on but Frank Heverin had his angles covered and the London attack was thwarted.
London started the second half much brighter and got their goal to level the match from a speculative high ball that held up on the wind as was fisted to the net. Galway then settled down and started to play some good football taking some great scores. Points were added by Padraic Carty, Mike Costello and John Hannon. The game turned when Padraic Dé Paor intercepted a quick kick out and slid the ball to Sean Kenny who made no mistake finishing to the net with a finish Harry Keane would have been proud of. Galway tacked on further scores through Fergal McEvoy, Laurence Kenny and Monty Heneghan to finish of a job well done for the tribesmen masters.
Special thanks to the London masters and Finbarr Holian in the Claddagh Ring pub for their hospitality.

Sentencing for manslaughter of Oughterard publican hears victim impact statements from family
Galway Bay fm newsroom- The Kenny family’s victim impact statement has been read to Galway Circuit Court stating that they had spent the last seven years in torment, trying to piece together John’s final moments.
A 24-year-old father of two was sentenced to nine years in prison today for his role in the manslaughter of Co. Galway teacher and publican, John Kenny, over seven years ago.
24 year old Marian Lingurar Jr, a Romanian national with former addresses in Loughgeorge, Claregalway, and Blackpool, Cork, was found guilty by a jury last January of the manslaughter of Mr Kenny, at Kenny’s pub in Oughterard on September 25, 2011, and was remanded in custody for sentence today.
The trial had heard evidence that Mr Kenny had been badly beaten, tied up and left to die alone on the floor of the ladies’ toilet in his pub by a gang of men, including the accused, who had planned to rob him that night.
The accused had been a 16-year-old bouncer, working on the door of the pub the previous evening.
He had been in constant phone contact with his father and two other men who came to the pub later that night.
Mrs Kenny and her daughter found Mr Kenny’s body the following evening.
He had sustained severe injuries to his upper body, consistent with blows from a heavy object and with kicks and punches.
His hands had been tied behind his back and a jacket wound tightly around his face and head.
Post mortem results indicated he would not have died immediately from his injuries and would have had difficulty breathing due to the position in which his body had been left, face-down on the toilet floor.
Lingurar Jr was also found guilty of a second charge of burglary at Mr Kenny’s pub on the same night after it emerged a ‘wad’ of cash had been taken from Mr Kenny’s pocket and also from the till.
The accused had absconded from the jurisdiction before his initial trial was due to take place in 2013, but was arrested when he returned to Cork last May.
He denied any involvement in the assault and robbery of Mr Kenny but later said he was sorry to hear of his death.
A probation report handed into court today indicated he did not accept the jury’s guilty verdict.
Reading the Kenny family’s victim impact statement to the court, Mrs. Kathleen Kenny said in a composed and dignified manner that they had spent the last seven years in torment, trying to piece together John’s final moments.
She said John’s voice had been taken from him the night he died but their statement would give him back his voice now.
Imposing sentence, Judge Rory McCabe said the “defenceless and vulnerable” Mr Kenny had been badly beaten and left to die alone following a carefully planned robbery with violence.
He said the accused was a participant in the joint enterprise of a cruel, vicious and ultimately fatal robbery which had been carefully planned.
The judge said the charge of manslaughter carried a maximum of life in prison before placing the headline sentence in this case at ten years.
In mitigation, he took the accused’s young age and the fact imprisonment for a foreign national is known to carry additional hardship into account before applying a 10% discount.

Galway’s Hidden Gems 9TH OF MAY 7PM
While a lot of recent attention has been given to deep sea biodiversity off Ireland’s coasts, inshore coastal biodiversity is often overlooked. Galway is lucky to host two globally rare species – the Firework anemone (Pachycerianthus multiplicatus) and the reef forming worm Serpula vermicularis. Rory O’Callaghan of Seasearch Ireland will present a talk on the unique challenges of recording in marine inshore waters, the work of Seasearch Ireland and some of the amazing life lying just below the surface of Galway’s marine waters, including photographs and videos of these unique habitats.
Seasearch is a project by the Marine Conservation Society for divers and snorkelers, who have an interest in what they’re seeing under water, want to learn more and want to help protect the marine environment around the coasts of Britain and Ireland. Seasearch Ireland is a citizen science initiative to encourage divers and snorkelers to document details of species seen during marine dives to help build the knowledge base on the distribution of marine species in Ireland’s in-shore waters To date volunteer recorders have collected over 50,000 species and habitat records in Irish waters, with all data provided to the National Biodiversity Data Centre and freely available on the Data Centre’s mapping portal, Biodiversity Maps.

‘Understanding Sharks’ -A European Maritime Day Event
Date: 18TH MAY
Location: Ladies Beach, Salthill Galway City & Galway Atlantaquaria
Galway Atlantaquaria, Marine Dimensions and the Explorers Education Programme TM invite the pubic to attend a series of Shark themed events in Salthill on the 18thMay, in celebration of European Maritime Day #EMD.
Sharks are probably one of the most misunderstood animals in history! Peter Benchley, author of ‘Jaws’, has expressed regret at the negative impact his book has had on the perception of sharks.
“What I now know, which wasn’t known when I wrote Jaws, is that there is no such thing as a rogue shark which develops a taste for human flesh,’’ “No one appreciates how vulnerable they are to destruction.’’
As we learn more about sharks we begin to see another image of these beautiful animals. With the recent discovery of a shark nursery off Ireland’s shores, it’s time to rewrite the shark story.
Dr. Sarah Varian from Marine Dimensions said ‘We now understand that sharks play a vital role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems, so it’s important that we safeguard the future of these impressive predators.’
The Understanding Sharks, European Maritime Day event will include
- A Shark Egg Hunt on the Ladies Beach Salthill from 11.30-12.30 (free to the public).
- Ireland’s Sharks and Rays Workshop at Galway Atlantaquaria from 1.30-2.30 (Free to the public – spaces limited so pre booking required. contact info@nationalaquarium.ie or Tel 091-585100 to book your space).

Planned Lidl for Wellpark being opposed by grocers group
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The decision by the city council to allow Lidl open a new store at Wellpark in the city is being opposed.
Earlier this year, Radical Properties Unlimited Company was granted planning permission for the former PC World premises in Wellpark to be transformed into a Lidl discount supermarket.
However, that decision has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.
RGDATA, the representative association for independent family-owned grocery outlets has lodged an appeal against the new Lidl store.
The group says the development of a Lidl store ‘out of centre’ goes against Retail Planning Guidelines which aim to protect the viability of the city centre.
RGDATA also claims that the Lidl store would go against the zoning of the area and there would be inadequate car parking.
A second appeal has also been lodged with An Bord Pleanála against the Lidl development at Wellpark.
A city resident argues that the development conflicts with the City Development Plan, because the area is zoned for bulky goods retail use.
A decision is due from An Bord Pleanála in August.

Call for introduction of rates on county derelict buildings following fire at Oughterard hotel
Galway Bay fm newsroom – A County Councillor says a fire at a long-vacant hotel in Oughterard shows the urgent need to introduce rates on derelict properties.
It’s after a blaze broke out at the former Corrib Hotel at Main Street in the town shortly after midnight.
It’s believed there may have been antisocial behavior at the site prior to the blaze and Gardai are conducting a technical examination.
Councillor Tom Welby says it’s not the first incident at the site, which has been vacant for almost 10 years and is understood to be owned by an investment fund.
Independent Councillor Welby says something needs to be done to encourage the redevelopment of such properties. For more on this story tune in to Galway Bay fm news on the hour…
