Unpredictable spring weather has really shown us her smile at the Gaelforce Mountain Run in partnership with John West this weekend in Leenane, Co. Galway. After thunder and lightning in the early hours of the morning, things calmed down for the race. The Mountain Run offered spectacular views of Connemara and gave runners unique access to some of the most stunning peaks in the region.

With trail running and mountain running taking the world by storm the Gaelforce Mountain Run lived up the promise of a tailored race to fit a wide audience from novice mountain runner to experts with many competitors coming over from Europe and America.

The Gaelforce Mountain Run proved an amazing event for runners of many levels, offering three difficulties – 12km Introductory, 13km Intermediate, 22km Expert.

The 22km Expert route follows another ascent and a steep descent to keep it interesting. This distance is an UTMB qualifying race – The UTMB is Europe’s most prestigious trail running event through the Alps. Big congratulations to Ricki Wynne who claimed first price in the male category with a time of 2 hour 24 minutes. Rachel Nolan and Elizabeth Wheeler who finished the race together with a stunning time of 3 hours and 7 minutes. Both women decided to donate the prize money of 250 Euro to the Galway Rape Crisis Centre in honour of International Women’s day.

The 13km Intermediate offered stunning views from various peeks varying from 320 to 562 meters in elevation. Bernadette O’Neill was the first female over the finish line at 1 hour 54 mins and Aidan Buckley came first in the male category at 1hour 44 mins.

The 12km Introductory Mountain/Trail Run saw Vernon Walsh take first place in the male with a time of 1 hour and 3 minutes and Emer O’Connell being the fasted woman on the route with 1 hour and 13 mins.

As well as taking part in the event, participants, especially from overseas, had a great time exploring the West of Ireland and took in some of the famous sights between Clifden and Westport such as Kylemore and the Connemara National Park during this spring weekend.

Motorsport Ireland Weekend Roundup

In a dramatic finish to the season which began last September, the duel for the Hewison Trophy Autotest Championship ended yesterday in a tie, with the two protagonists equal on points after 12 counting rounds, and as they had identical scores event by event, the tie-deciding regulation was unable to separate them.

Defending title holder Ian White from Kilkenny and his challenger, Meath’s Guy Foster, were level on points as they went into the final doubleheader weekend organised by Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club in Waterford city, and they scored a win and a second place each, with White opening the battle by taking a 3.8 second victory on Saturday.

However, yesterday started badly for the Kilkenny man, with a mistake on the opening test costing him six seconds to Foster, and he was never able to recover from this, although he did manage to reduce the gap to 2.2 by the finish. Local Waterford driver Paddy Power finished third on Saturday, almost 40 seconds behind the lead battle, while Darren Quille from Kildare took that position yesterday.

Connacht Eagles Name Squad For Cara Cup

The Connacht Eagles management team have named a 26-man squad who will travel to the United States this week for the inaugural Cara Cup.

The Cara Cup will see ‘A’ sides from the four provinces head to Massachusetts for a six game tournament spread across four weeks. As well as an inter-pro clash with Ulster A on Wednesday week, the Eagles will take on tournament hosts the New England Free Jacks on the opening day of the competition this Saturday 16th.

The Cara Cup follows on from the inaugural Celtic Cup earlier in the season when the four provinces partnered with A squads from the WRU and the SRU for a seven-game tournament.

Commenting on the squad announcement, Connacht Eagles head coach Mossy Lawler says the trip will be a great opportunity for players on and off the pitch.

“We’re really looking forward to our trip to the States for the Cara Cup. We’ve got a lot of guys with experience and some with inexperience, but ultimately everyone is travelling for a different reason so that’s where we’re going to get our hunger.”

“There were a lot of guys who played in the Celtic Cup who have gone on to win their first cap, so the Eagles setup in the Academy is hugely important in terms of up-skilling those players to be able to play at the next level for the province.”

Galway could lose local cemeteries to a new regional graveyard

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway could become a location for a regional graveyard, according to the Environment Department of Galway County Council.

At a meeting of Athenry-Oranmore Municipal District Council today (11/3), councillors were told that there are over 230 burial grounds listed with 180 caretakers.

50 thousand euro is allocated in the annual council budget for extensions of burial grounds this year.

Paraic Carroll from the Environment Department says each individual extension usually costs about 50 thousand euro alone and funding is way too low.

The council is currently reviewing the cost of plots in county burial grounds with a view to raising it, however Paraic Carroll says this will still not adequately tackle the funding shortfall.

He said going forward, Galway could end up having a regional graveyard because the council can’t meet the cost of extensions and land purchases.

Councillor Gabe Cronnelly told the meeting that cremations are becoming a lot more popular and the council should look at providing storage for urns.
