Galway Bay fm newsroom- The regulations now in force for community groups who want to organise litter clean-ups are becoming prohibitive.

That was the message from several councillors at a meeting of Conamara Municipal District Council.

Mary McGann from the Community & Enterprise Department in the council says a tidy towns workshop was held and revealed that not all groups are aware of the procedure in terms of organising clean ups.

She told councillors that there is no problem with insurance but groups need a template to work off which could be distributed through the Public Participation Network.

Galway Roscommon foster care report finds moderate non compliance in safeguarding

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Galway Roscommon areas were found to be moderately non-compliant in four categories in the latest report on Tusla’s national standards for foster care.

The report summarises the overall findings from all 17 service area inspections, conducted throughout 2017 and 2018, and the follow-up inspections and desktop reviews carried out in all four regions in 2018.

In the Galway/Roscommon Service Area, the 2017 themed inspection found moderate non-compliance in relation to safeguarding and child protection.

In the 2017 judgement, the Galway/Roscommon region was found to be compliant in the area of general foster carers assesment.

The group was found to be substantially compliant in relative foster carers assesment.

It was also found to be substantially compliant in the areas of training, recruitment and retention.

However, moderate non-conpliance was noted in the four categories of safeguarding and child protection, support and supervision, reviews and foster care committee.

The areas for improvement related to allegations not always being notified to the Foster Care Committees and inconsistent classification of complaints, concerns and allegations to ensure the correct response.

In 2017, over half of the 220 general foster carers in the Galway/Roscommon Service Area did not have up-to-date Garda vetting.

Not all staff were clear about the provisions of the protected disclosures policy and not all foster carers were trained in Children First.

The follow-up inspection in 2018 found that some progress had been made which led to improvements in the service area.

The statement of progress returned by the area outlined that all the identified actions to ensure that staff were familiar with protected disclosures, and that all allegations were classified correctly, had now been completed.

HIQA carried out follow-up monitoring of the foster care services in four out of five service areas in the West Region between February and March 2018.

Based on the findings of the 2017 themed inspections, which focused on eight standards, and the resulting action plans, a statement of progress in the form of a self-assessment was completed by each service area.

Desktop reviews were carried out for Galway/Roscommon and Mayo.

The report recorded 216 general foster carers at the time of follow up in the Galway Roscommon region, with 69 relative foster carers and 403 children in care.

In their refusal, planners also state the development contravenes the city development plan standards in relation to the prevention of overlooking of adjacent lands.

Clash of the Titans In Tralee This Weekend As Warriors Prepare For Epic Showdown With Templeogue

$

It will be the clash of the titans in Tralee Sports Complex this weekend as Garvey’s Tralee Warriors prepare for an epic showdown with league leaders, Templeogue, in a hugely-anticipated top of the table clash.

With everything at stake for both sides, there’s going to be no easy victory, and Warriors star, Kieran Donaghy admits it will come down to small margins on the day.

“We’ve a juggernaut coming down here on Saturday night,” Donaghy stated. “This is a team with four or five internationals, with one of the best Americans in the country, and they’re top of the league for a reason. We need the crowd from the first minute to the last next Saturday night. Bring drums, foghorns, whatever you can – it’s about inches on Saturday night. A win here would move us closer to winning the Super League, which, when we put this team together three years ago, we would have only dreamed of doing.”

The sides have met twice already this season, both of these clashes on Templeogue’s home turf of Oblate Hall in Inchicore, and both of these clashes seeing Tralee come out on top – including a massive Cup win that knocked the then reigning Cup champions out of contention for this year’s Cup competition. Thus, with Templeogue still smarting after losing at the hands of the Kerry men twice, there’s no doubt that this weekend’s showdown in the Kingdom will be anything but a battle royale.

“We’ll prepare and do our job,” Templeogue’s Puff Summers stated ahead of the game. “We’ve seen them a lot this year. Both teams are fairly familiar with each other. They’ve a new American so we’ll have to contain him. They’re tough. They’re Championship worthy, but we’re Championship worthy too. At this stage in the season, this is what it’s all about.”

Elsewhere, reigning league champions, UCD Marian, are also still in prime position to do a back-to-back title win, and regardless of what happens in Kerry, have a must-win clash against C and S Neptune to look forward to on Saturday. Neptune will come into the game just as hungry though, as they need a big win in Dublin in order to try to climb their way out of the relegation zone. Carrickmacross in Co. Monaghan meanwhile is preparing for a taste of Super League basketball as DCU Saints have moved their home fixture to the Monaghan town where they will welcome UCC Demons in a battle for sixth place. Elsewhere, Belfast Star hosts Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin while Pyrobel Killester face off against Maree on Sunday evening.

Over in the Women’s Super League meanwhile, the battles for top six positions are overheating, with DCU Mercy, Ambassador UCC Glanmire, Fr Mathews, Singleton SuperValu Brunell,  Maxol WIT Wildcats and Pyrobel Killester all fighting for just five remaining spots. There are two crucial clashes in this battle this weekend, with DCU Mercy on the road to Glanmire, while Wildcats will host Fr Mathews in what is set to be one of the games of the weekend.

Elsewhere, Courtyard Liffey Celtics will officially be crowned Women’s Super League champions on Saturday night in their last home game against IT Carlow Basketball, Pyrobel Killester and Marble City Hawks will be foes on the court on Saturday meanwhile, but will join forces afterwards in a big celebration at the IWA in Clontarf to mark International Women’s Day. The final match up of the weekend sees Singleton SuperValu Brunell face off against Galway’s NUIG Mystics.

The Men’s Division One is also heading into to the closing stages, with one of the picks of the weekend being the top of the conferences clash between DBS Éanna and Tradehouse Central Ballincollig in Dublin on Saturday night, while the Women’s Division One sides may be finished their regular season, but have a big WNLC blitz to look forward to at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght this coming Saturday, in a big celebration of women’s basketball.

Oughterard meeting to discuss Lough Corrib salmonoid designation

$

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A meeting will take place in Oughterard this evening to discuss a court decision to block the designation of Lough Corrib as a salmonoid water.

Bye-laws were introduced by the Government late last year, which aimed to offer increased protection for the species at seven bodies of water nationwide.

However, the High Court subsequently anulled the new laws after a challenge was brought by the Irish Pike Society and Federation of Pike Angling Clubs.

Other groups who supported the new laws claim the Government’s failure to contest the legal challenge demands immediate answers.

A meeting will take place at Oughterard National School this evening at 8 and will be attended by Gaeltacht Minister and Galway West TD Sean Kyne. For more on this story tune in to The News@1 for Galway…
