Galway 1-11 Mayo 0-8

By DARAGH SMALL at MacHale Park

Sarah Conneally struck 1-1 as Galway made it four wins from four in Division 1 of the Lidl National Football League against Mayo at MacHale Park in Castlebar.

The wind was likely to have a massive impact on proceedings but Galway played against the breeze in the first-half and still took a 0-6 to 0-4 lead into half-time.

Conneally struck shortly after the interval and Tim Rabbitte’s side picked up a confidence boosting victory before they defend their provincial crown against Mayo on 23 June.

Mayo captain Niamh Kelly won the toss and she elected to play with the breeze in the opening half, but Galway kicked the first three scores of the game.

Olivia Divilly scored in the third minute for the dream start, and further points followed from cousins Róisín and Tracey Leonard.

Mayo had to make use of the elements and began to drive the ball long into their dangerous forward line. But they had to wait until the sixth minute before Niamh Kelly pointed off her right, and her sister Grace Kelly reduced the arrears further with a free.

The Moy Davitts duo kept Mayo in the game, and the teams were level for the first time when Niamh Kelly sent over her second point at the end of the first quarter but it was Galway who powered on.

Mairead Seoighe scored a fine effort and Louise Ward gave them a two-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the first-half.

Neither side could add to their tallies towards the end of the half and Galway held a comfortable 0-6 to 0-4 advantage, considering the had the wind to come after the break.

Mayo manager Peter Leahy introduced Natasha Gaughan, Kathryn Sullivan and Natalie Prendergast at half-time, and the former scored two frees to tie the game up after 35 minutes.

But the crucial goal arrived three minutes later when Róisín Leonard put Conneally through and she blasted to Sorcha Murphy’s top left corner.

And Fabienne Cooney came to her team’s rescue, when she dispossessed a goal-bound Grace Kelly, as Galway closed in on another impressive victory.

Scorers – Galway: S Conneally 1-1, T Leonard 0-3 (3f), R Leonard 0-3, M Seoighe 0-1, L Ward 0-1, O Divilly 0-1, A Thompson 0-1.

Ivan Gamarra And Andreas Werner Sign For Galway United

Alan Murphy has finalised his squad for 2019 with the signings of Ivan Gamarra and Andreas Werner.

23-year-old central midfielder Ivan Gamarra joins the club from PSM in his native Argentina.

The tough tackling midfielder played his youth football with famed Argentinian club, Rosario Central.

22-year-old German goalkeeper Andreas Werner makes the move to Eamonn Deacy Park from Andorran side FC Encamp.

The former Anderlecht youth player counts KSK Heist, Leopold FC and Waterloo FC as former clubs.

Alan Murphy spoke to www.galwayunitedfc.ie about the two final additions to his squad for 2019.

“Ivan came to our attention very early in pre-season, when we held open trials, which attracted a lot of players with a variety of qualities,” he explained.

“The purpose of those open trials was to attract players like Ivan, who wouldn’t normally be on our radar. It’s a huge plus for Galway United management that the outside the box thinking we did as a club has unearthed a gem like Ivan Gamarra.

“Coming from Argentina, physicality was never going to be an issue with the player. Ivan has bedded in very quickly in terms of football style. He’s a technical player, who is extremely combative and very economical with the football.

“Ivan is perfect for the project we have, he’s an ambitious young player that needs an opportunity to prove himself. He’s hugely invested in Galway United in terms of moving here, setting himself up and really buying into what we’re trying to do as a club.”

Andreas Werner will provide stiff competition for Kevin Horgan and James Tierney for the number one spot in 2019.

“Andreas is very a confident goalkeeper,” Murphy said.

“He’s extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet, his reactions, distribution of the ball and command of his area is very good.

“Andreas fits perfectly into the way we want to play and he provides the communication and leadership that will be required at the back throughout the season.

“It will be an exciting season for Andreas, he will have to fight for that number one spot with Kevin Horgan and James Tierney.

“I’m delighted with the three keepers that I’ve been able to bring into the club for the coming season. We have three technical keepers, they all bring different dimensions and strengths to the squad.

“It’s going to be exciting for all three to work together and learn from each other and to try and nail down that spot in the team once they get an opportunity.”

Ivan Gamarra will wear the number 17 jersey, while Andreas Werner dons the number 16 for United.

Andreas Werner made his competitive debut for United against Wexford FC on Friday night in Ferrycarrig Park, replacing the injured Kevin Horgan.

Ivan Gamarra has received his international clearance and could make his first appearance for the club against Athlone Town on Monday night in the EA SPORTS Cup.

Maree’s Super League men’s team lost out to a title chasing Garvey’s Tralee Warriors side in Kerry on Saturday evening, 88-70. In a game that Tralee needed to win in order to keep their title dreams alive, they knocked the visitors out of their rhythm early on, with superb displays from Paul Dick and Eoin Quigley. Maree had some great patches thanks to 27 points from Sean Sellers, but the hosts ran out 18 point winners in a dominant display in the end.

Moycullen also suffered defeat in the Men’s Super League as they fell victim to great team play from Belfast Star, losing out 82-91 in Galway. Belfast Star returned to winning ways thanks to 32 points from the hugely talented Mike Davis. Moycullen find themselves in a tough position at the bottom of the Men’s Super League and will welcome UCD Marian to the Kingfisher in a fortnight, in what is a must-win clash.

NUIG Mystics suffered yet another defeat in the Women’s Super League as they lost out to Marble City Hawks, 41-59. Mystics never found their groove as they allowed Hawks to build and maintain an early lead. Ailish O’Reilly top scored for Mystics with 20 points in a fantastic individual effort, however, Hawks kept their lead throughout to see out the game.

It was a tough weekend all round for Galway teams as Gamefootage.net Titans were defeated 92-77 by Fr Mathews in Cork on Saturday. After a promising start to the game, through help from Tom Rivard, Titans looked to have the pace and intensity to drive on. Mick McGinn changed Mathew’s fortunes in the second half, however, and he finished with a whopping 33 points and most importantly, the win for the Cork side.

Athlone Town vs Galway United

Athlone Town Stadium

Monday, March 4th

Kick-off: 7.45pm

Galway United make the short trip to the midlands to face Athlone Town in the first round of the EA SPORTS Cup on Monday evening. Kick-off is at 7.45pm at Athlone Town Stadium.

Both sides recorded encouraging wins on their travels on Friday night. United were convincing 4-0 winners against Wexford at Ferrycarrig Park, while Athlone Town recorded a hard fought 1-0 win at St. Colman’s Park to defeat Cobh Ramblers.

Speaking ahead of Monday’s game, Alan Murphy told www.galwayunitedfc.ie: “Both ourselves and Athlone had long journeys over the weekend. Players will still be recovering from the journey alone on the bus.

“Both clubs have large squads, so there are a lot of players that will need game time to impress both managers and supporters. They’ll want to stake a claim ahead of the weekend’s league fixtures.”

IN FORM ATHLONE

“It will be interesting to get some of those players on the pitch. Looking at Athlone, they’re on the crest of a wave in terms of their performances and results at the moment.

“They’ve done really well and their squad will be high in confidence, so it will provide us with a good test of where we are and the depth of both squads.

“It will be a real solid test and a change from playing opposition you might not know a lot about in the opening rounds.”

DEMANDING HIGH STANDARDS

“Game time is huge in this part of the season, we have to get players up to speed and get that sharpness in all of the squad. The timing couldn’t be better for us.

“We need to be consistent and to demand a performance again. The performances in the first two games of the season for a large has been satisfactory and we want to maintain that.”

TEAM NEWS

Conor Layng (cruciate), Andrew Peters (ankle), Iarfhlaith Davoren (calf) and Christopher Horgan (dead leg) are ruled out of the Athlone Town game.

Wilson Waweru misses the game due to playing in a college final with Galway Technical Institute (GTI).

Kevin Horgan is rated as 50/50 with an abdominal injury sustained in Friday’s win against Wexford.

Moville Community College 0-3 Coláiste Bhaile Chláir

                                                       Shauna Brennan (6),

                                                        Alisha Bohan (49),

                                                         Ellie Creane (68)

It was bitter sweet revenge for Coláiste Bhaile Chláir in Ray MacSharry Park in Sligo on Tuesday afternoon as they overcame rivals Moville Community College with a hat-trick of goals to advance in this tie.

The Donegal contingency had captured top spot last season defeating the Claregalway select 2-1 to lift the prestigious title in 2018 but it wasn’t to be as the Galway girls delivered a stunning performance to crush their two in-a-row title ambitions.

It was a dream start for Shauna Brennan as the youngster produced a moment of magic six minutes in to slot past the diving Fiona McLaughlin. However Brennan was to pick up a nasty ankle injury minutes later which saw her replaced by Kiara Keanney.

Moville found it hard to get going in this clash and it was a lack lustre performance from the usually impressive team.

The Connacht stars however were enjoying much of the possession which saw their lead doubled on 49 minutes when Alisha Bohan struck gold with a remarkable strike to leave McLaughlin with no chance.

Kerry Brown and Megan Havlin were trying to produce moments of magic but the final ball was lacking, adding to the duo’s frustrations.

While two minutes from time, Ellie Creane’s daring lob from distance found the back of the net to ensure her team’s progression in this contest.

Dominant Connacht Overcome Ospreys

Connacht 45 Ospreys 5

Connacht came away with a six-try victory over rivals Ospreys in the Guinness Pro14. The bonus point win has sent Andy Friend’s side back into the play-off spots with just four games left in the season.

Match Report courtesy of pro14.org

Kieran Marmion’s double inspired a huge win as Connacht maintained their formidable home record with a 46-5 victory over Ospreys in a one-sided Guinness PRO14 tie. Keen to bounce back from the loss to Glasgow last week, Connacht bossed the early exchanges, with Tom Farrell crossing early before two penalties from the excellent Kyle Godwin extended the lead.

Matthew Aubrey hit back against the run of play before Matt Healy, Marmion and a penalty try restored Connacht’s dominance. Marmion crossed again before Tom McCartney scored in a comfortable second half as the result was all but decided by Connacht’s early blitz.

Connacht flew out of the gates with a slick move to score their first through Farrell as a series of swift handoffs early on allowed the centre to cross the line in acres of space. They continued to pile on the pressure early doors as they showed intensity with every drive to pin their opponents in their own 22.

Ospreys appeared to have repelled the pressure but gave away a needless penalty which Godwin dispatched with ease.

The out-half converted again as Connacht looked to be firmly in control, but Ospreys’ Olly Cracknell charged down a drop kick and the ball fell for Aubrey to score out wide against the run of play.

Godwin appeared to continue his blinder of a first half as he latched onto an opposition kick to storm past four defenders and cross the line. But protests from the Welsh side over an off-the-ball block bore fruit as the try was ruled out and Ospreys’ remained well in it.

Godwin and Farrell set up Healy for Connacht’s second try with two incisive passes and the winger crossed between the posts to tee up an easy conversion for Godwin. Marmion was then the beneficiary of a powerful team effort as Connacht drove a maul over the line on the half–hour mark.

Ospreys had chances to reduce the deficit before half time but two crucial interceptions saw the ball up the other end of the pitch, where Connacht were awarded a penalty try after a deliberate knock-on from Keelan Giles.

The Welsh side’s ill-discipline continued after the break as Jordan Lay received a yellow to give Connacht a two-man advantage.

Ospreys rallied well to gain some territory, but Marmion put any notion of a comeback out of sight as he was set up by Jarrad Butler to score between the posts.

With the victory secured, Connacht rung in the changes, but Ospreys failed to convert their increased possession into points. Instead, McCartney further embellished the scoreline as he drove over powerfully following a scrum.

Greene competes for Ireland

Cillin Greene of GCH competed in the 400m on the Irish team at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow last weekend. Greene was the first Irish athlete in action on Friday, but he was most unlucky as he failed to finish his 400m heat after a mid-race collision. The GCH runner got off to a strong start but at the 200m mark he collided with Poland’s Karol Zalewski, although both runners quickly recovered. Disaster was to follow however, as race favourite, Czech athlete Jan Tesar ran into Zalewski before hitting the ground and Greene, who was right behind the Czech, tripped over Tesar and was unable to finish out the race.

All in all, the championships were a great experience for the talented Greene, who will no doubt focus next on his outdoor season and look to further lower his personal bests.

The IUAA Intervarsity Cross-Country Championships were held Saturday 2nd March last at St Mary’s College Galway, with the event attracting some of the country’s best cross-country runners and teams. The rain cleared just in time for the races, but a combination of high winds and a true cross-country circuit meant a real test for the athletes who made the trip west.

The races were of great quality, with double wins for DCU athletes, via Emma O’Brien in the Ladies race and Paul Robinson in the Men’s in what were two dramatic races. DCU combined well to win both team titles while NUIG took bronze team medals in the Men’s event, and fourth in the Ladies.

In the Ladies race, Emma O’Brien took control of the race early on and never took her foot off the pedal, running hard all the way to claim a very impressive victory, ahead of Avril Deegan also of DCU in second and the fast finishing Nadia Power in third. Power pipped long time third Sorcha McAllister and Cliona Murphy of Trinity in an exciting duel for the bronze medal.  Caron Ryan of Trinity was first Galway lady home in eighth place with Aoife O’Brien first scorer for NUI Galway in a great 14th place. NUI Galway’s other scorers were Rhona Pierce, Orna Murray and Niamh Hennelly with NUIG Ladies placing fourth team overall.

The Men’s race was a much tighter affair, with a great battle for the title between Paul Robinson, of DCU, Damien Landers of NUI Galway and UCD’s Paul O’Donnell, which had the large attendance enthralled for the duration of the testing 8km race. The lead group of three broke away on the second lap, and from then on each of the trio tried to get away at various points on the classic St Mary’s circuit, It was only on the last lap that O’Donnell fell off the pace, and Landers then tried to break away from Robinson on the fast front section, but the determined DCU athlete hung on, and sprinted away in the home straight for a well-earned victory.

Damien Landers of the host college was slightly disappointed with second, a sign of the talented athlete’s desire and huge talent, and he surely has a great few years ahead of him. O’Donnell held on well for the bronze medal for UCD.  NUIG Men’s team, via scorers Landers, Donal Devane, Andrew O Donnghaile, Finley Daly, James Frizzell, and Jack Miskella combined well to secure bronze medals for the home team.
