Galway Bay fm newsroom – Controversy in continuing within the Fianna Fáil party locally as it continues to line up candidates to contest the local elections.

Earlier this month, sitting Councillors Donagh Killilea and Mary Hoade were selected at a convention to contest the local elections in the Tuam constituency.

It’s understood third candidate, businessman Joe Sheridan from Milltown narrowly missed out on one of the two positions on the ticket at the convention.

Former T.D Colm Keaveney who had initally indicated that he would seek a nomination, pulled out before the selection convention.

However Fianna Fáil Headquarters has subsequently added Joe Sheridan and Colm Keaveney to the ticket for Tuam and now Councillor Killilea is considering his political future.

Significant rise in enrollment numbers in city multi-denominational schools

Galway Bay fm news:

There’s been a significant rise in the number of children enrolling at multi-denominational schools in the city.

A multidenominational school is a type of school which moves away from traditional religion-based models, such as the Catholic ethos.

Preliminary enrollment numbers from the Department of Education show a sharp increase in pupils attending multi-denominational schools.

Between September 2017 and September of last year, enrolments in multi-denominational primary schools in the city increased by over 11 percent.

That compares to an increase of less than one percent in Catholic schools during the same period.

Meanwhile, figures for enrollment in multi-denominational post-primary schools show an increase of almost 7 percent during that time.

That figure compares to just over half a percent in Catholic schools.

Overall, enrollments in primary and post-primary schools in the city have risen by 1.9 percent in the 12 months from September 2017.

Meanwhile, the research found that the city is the only region in the country to have no primary schools with 60 or fewer pupils.

It also shows that the average primary school size in the city is 305 pupils, above the national average of 180 pupils.

While the average post-primary school size stands at 574 – that’s 71 over the national average.

Maree Women Complete League and Cup Double

Maree Women’s Division One have officially completed a historic double of National Cup and National League titles, thanks to seeing off the challenge of Phoenix Rockets at home 73-56 on Saturday afternoon to see them finish the regular season unbeaten.

Rockets took an early lead in the game through standout player Amber Deane. Maree slowly came back into the game and thanks to Claire Rockall and Fiona Scally, the Galway side ran out victorious.
Speaking after the victory, Maree head coach Joe Shields said, “It’s a fantastic achievement for us, we went unbeaten. We went into the season in the great unknown, not knowing what was ahead of us but I wouldn’t swap this feeling for the world now.”

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Maree men’s team meanwhile, as they secured an 85-66 victory over CandS Neptune in Galway on Saturday evening, before falling to UCC Demons, 81-90 on Sunday.

Their victory over Neptune was crucial to keep ahead of the bottom pack of the table, and was led by 32 points from Niels Bunschoten, and saw out the game.
After the Neptune victory, Maree assistant coach John Finn said, “I felt we weren’t playing with enough confidence in the first half and we struggled. Once the lads had faith in themselves in the second, their composure led us to win.”

Moycullen succumbed 64-89 to Pyrobel Killester in the Men’s Super League on Saturday evening meanwhile. Isaiah Harris-Winn top scored for Moycullen with 22 points but Killester’s Royce Williams bagged himself 26 points on the way to leading his team to victory. Moycullen remain in a three-way tie at the bottom of the Men’s Super League, tied with CandS Neptune and Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin.

NUIG Mystics have yet to taste victory in the Women’s Super League this season, as they were defeated 41-73 by DCU Mercy. Kayla Morrissey top scored with 19 points for Mystics, however, the well-rounded team play of DCU saw them pull away early and achieve victory.

Gamefootage.net Titans suffered a 79-92 defeat to LIT in Galway on Friday evening. Titans were never able to fight back at LIT’s early lead, despite the best efforts of Tom Rivard and Matthew Sweeney. Matt Scamuffo dropped a whopping 32 points in his side’s victory.

Galway Camogie Team Book Place In Semi-Final

Compiled by Daragh Ó Conchúir

Galway earned a 2-7 to 0-13 draw to finish top of Group 2 on score difference. They rocked the All-Ireland champions with a goal from Carrie Dolan after just 15 seconds and they had a second four minutes later, through Noreen Coen.

Cork got back in the game with four points, including two from youngsters Ciara McCarthy and Clíona Healy, with the vastly more experienced Ashling Thompson and Orla Cotter also on target. The game settled down after that whirlwind opening and points from Coen and Noreen Hanniffy gave Cathal Murray’s charges a 2-5 to 0-6 interval advantage.

Cork stepped up a couple of gears in the second half, points from Cotter, Thompson and Chloe Sigerson drawing them level but it wasn’t enough to leapfrog over the Maroons on the table.

Ollie Turner reports…

Kilkenny will resume their rivalry with Cork and but Galway will take on Limerick in the Littlewoods Ireland Camogie League Division 1 Semi-Finals as a result of the last round of group action, while Offaly must do battle with Wexford to determine who makes the drop to the second tier.

Kilkenny are pursuing a fourth consecutive title but needed a 63rd minute point from Michelle Quilty to claim a 1-12 to 0-14 victory over Limerick in the Gaelic Grounds that ensured they finished the round-robin phase on top of Group 1.

Denise Gaule excelled in the first half for Kilkenny at full-forward, with three points from play. Caoimhe Costelloe had two from Limerick and the teams were level on four occasions as they went in at the break deadlocked on 0-6 apiece. When Anna Farrell goaled four minutes after the restart however with a sumptuous finish, after good work initially by Anne Dalton and then by Quilty and Gaule, it opened up a four-point gap.

Caoimhe Lyons, Costelloe and Mulcahy kept the hosts in touch though and pointed frees on 58 and 60 minutes from Mulcahy that brought her tally to seven from placed balls appeared to have secured a share of the spoils.

But there was still time for Quilty to find the target for her sixth point and first from play to edge it for Kilkenny.

Dublin made sure of their top-flight status with a 1-7 to 0-7 victory over Clare at Cusack Park. Frank Browne’s troops led by a point at the interval (0-5 to 0-4) with Sinéad Wylde, Orla Beagan and Aoibhe Dillon on target for the visitor’s, and Chloe Morey hitting three of the home team’s points.

Aisling Maher’s goal four minutes after the restart opened up the vital gap and with Clare only able to add three points in the second half via Morey’s hurley, the win was Dublin’s.

Meanwhile, Tipperary bagged third position in Group 2 courtesy of a 1-11 to 0-10 triumph over Waterford at De La Salle’s Gracedieu complex. A very cagey first ended with the teams sharing 12 points and their star forwards, Beth Carton and Cáit Devane among the scorers but Tipp produced the one key piece of quality in the second half to end the campaign with a third-place finish.
