GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship Round 3 fixture confirmation

The GAA can confirm that the GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship Round Three meeting of Kildare and Mayo will take place in St Conleth’s Park in Newbridge on Saturday evening at 7.00pm.

Following discussions with the Kildare County Committee and An Garda Síochána in recent days, upgraded match-day and traffic management plans involving extra stewarding and Gardaí will be put in place to cater for the large crowds expected at the venue before the game.

The GAA wishes to point out that the decision by the CCCC to fix the game for Croke Park originally was based on serious concerns around the health and safety of patrons attending the fixture. The CCCC has received assurances that these issues will be adequately addressed.

The original capacity of 8,200 remains in place.

Both Kildare and Mayo County Committees will receive 1,500 tickets each for club distribution. The remainder will be used to meet the needs of players, season ticket holders and sponsors.

The GAA can also confirm that the meeting of Cavan and Tyrone will now take place at Brewster Park, Enniskillen.

Tickets purchased for the Croke Park double-header fixture will not be valid for these games and a refund process from the point of purchase has been put in place.

Supporters without tickets are urged not to come to St Conleth’s Park on Saturday.

Tickets for the new fixtures will be priced at €20/£18 (adults) and €5/£5 (juveniles).

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Water restrictions are to be imposed in the Ballyconneely and Foreglass areas of Connemara from tonight, as demand across the county increases.

Irish Water has issued a warning that further restrictions will have to be imposed in other areas if supply is not conserved.

Night-time restrictions are to be introduced on the Ballyconneely water treatment plant serving the Ballyconneely and Foreglass areas from 11pm to 7am for the foreseeable future.

Due to a major increase in demand, supply to Clarenbridge Water Tower is not sufficient to meet demand and customers in Clarinbridge, Kilcolgan, Roveagh, Ballinderreen and Tyrone Group Water Scheme are urged to conserve supply.

Irish Water has warned that night-time restrictions will be imposed if the situation does not improve.

Water restrictions are also in place on Inis Oirr nightly from 11pm to 7am and customers on Inis Mór and Inis Meain are also being asked to be mindful of their water consumption at this critical time.

Irish Water is appealing to the Galway public, particularly people working and living in Dunmore/Glenamaddy, Kilkerrin/Moylough, Ballygar, Ballymoe, Williamstown, Tuam, Athenry, Oranmore, Tir an Fhia, Letterfrack, Leitir Mór, Carraroe, Ballinasloe and Galway City to conserve water while the prolonged dry spell continues.

Irish Water’s Drought Management Team is meeting daily and is monitoring water supplies and demand around the country.

The current N59 bridge on the Clifden side of the village will be bypassed to make way for a new bridge 50 metres on the village side.

20 Galway investigations underway by Criminal Assets Bureau

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There are 20 investigations underway in the Galway Garda Division being carried out by the Criminal Assets Bureau.

The Chief Bureau Officer gave a presentation on the work of CAB to a meeting of the City Joint Policing Committee this week. (25/6)

Chief CAB Officer, Peter Glavin told members of the JPC that there are 9 garda CAB profilers operating in the Galway area.

There are 8 current full investigations and 12 preliminary investigations underway, where further information is needed.

The aim of the presentation was to encourage people to contact CAB confidentially if they have information that someone’s lifestyle is funded by crime.

Peter Glavin said he wants to assure the public that they will never be called to give evidence and all CAB needs is a tip-off to look into a situation.

The Criminal Assets Bureau is exempt from the Freedom of Information Act.

CAB staff include gardaí, revenue, employment affairs staff, I.T experts, social protection staff, legal advisors and forensic accountants.

Mr. Glavin said the majority of CAB investigations are based in Dublin and Galway has a relatively modest level.

He said that CAB in Ireland is now one of the first agencies in the world to seize cryptocurrency and was set up primarily in the wake of the murder of journalist, Veronica Geurin.

The biggest seizure of assets by CAB was 2.7 million euro from a branch of the Kinahan gang but Peter Glavin says CAB also sees the merit of going after low value criminals too.

JPC Committee member, Joe Loughnane raised concerns that people in Ireland who don’t like each other might have a tendancy to make malicious complaints.

The Chief Bureau Officer said that all investigations are thorough.

Councillor Padraig Conneely wanted information about the Galway investigations but Peter Glavin says he is bound by rules on confidentiality and he doesn’t want to give someone who is the target of a CAB investigation a heads-up.

Cork, Tipperary, Galway and Wexford to contest the Bord Gáis Energy GAA Hurling U-21 Munster and Leinster Finals

Rory O’Connor (Wexford), Jack Canning (Galway), Paudie Feehan (Tipperary) and Darragh Fitzgibbon (Cork) were in Token Arcade, in Smithfield, Dublin today ahead of the Bord Gáis Energy GAA Hurling U-21 Munster and Leinster Finals in which Wexford will face Galway and Cork will face Tipperary.

The Leinster decider will take place in O’ Moore Park, Portlaoise, while the Munster decider will be held in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Cork. Both games are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 4 with a 7.30pm throw-in.

The Rebels, after a 2017 U-21 Munster final defeat to Limerick, are looking forward to playing the final on home sod. It was Waterford they beat, by just 5 points to secure their place in the final two of the province. 2007 was the last time Cork won the Bord Gáis Energy GAA Hurling U-21 Munster Championship, beating Waterford 1-20 to 0-10.

Current U-21 Munster and All-Ireland title holders, Limerick, missed out on a place in the final when Tipperary defeated them by a score-line of 1-22 to 1-13. The Premier County now look forward to making amends for their last Munster final outing in 2016 when they were defeated by the Déise.

Wexford had a close semi-final encounter with Dublin on their way to the final. It was the two goals scored by super-sub, Mikie Dwyer that pushed the side’s three-point victory. It was just last year when Wexford played in the provincial final and the young side were significantly beaten by an impressive Kilkenny team.

New Leinster contenders, Galway have a one-game advantage coming into the final having played both Offaly and Kilkenny in their quarter and semi-final outings. The Leinster campaign is unknown territory for these young Tribesmen who have only represented in the All-Ireland series at this level until 2018.

Speaking at the Finals Preview event, Managing Director (interim) at Bord Gáis Energy, Mark Prentice said; “Over the last number of weeks, we’ve enjoyed some incredible games in the Bord Gáis Energy GAA Hurling U-21 Championship series and we fully expect the upcoming Munster and Leinster Finals to deliver just that again.

“A really big thank you to Paudie, Rory, Jack and Darragh for taking the time to be with us today and we wish them, their teammates and their management teams all the best in their games next Wednesday.”

Company appeals quarter of a million euro planning condition for Headford Road development

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The developers of a new mixed-use development at Headford Road are appealing a condition imposed on the grant of planning permission.

Earlier this year, Cleverson Ltd was granted permission for a new three storey building with retail units and a gym close to the IMC Cinema at Galway Retail Park.

One condition of planning is that a transportation cost of 260 thousand euro be paid to the council in respect of parking.

Cleverson Ltd. is appealing the condition imposed by the city council which requires a payment of 262 thousand euro towards public transportation costs.

In an appeal to An Bord Pleanála, Cleverson Ltd. argues that the new development will utilise the existing car park at Galway Retail Park.

It includes a legal document in its appeal which shows the company has legal access to use the car park at Galway Retail Park.

Cleverson Ltd is therefore urging An Bord Pleanála to remove the condition imposed by the city council requesting a fee for public transportation costs.

A decision is expected from the higher planning authority in October.
