Galway Bay fm newsroom – Oughterard Courthouse is set to re-open this evening as a community facility – 8 years after it closed its doors to the public.
The re-opening follows extensive refurbishment works worth over half a million euro.
The building, which dates back to the 1840’s, held its last court sitting in 2008 – which was adjourned by Judge Mary Fahy over the conditions at the courthouse.
A pool of water stood inside the door of the building, and there was no heating in the building.
The building will be re-opened by Judge Mary Fahy at 7 this evening – eight years to the day since she left the building over the poor conditions.
However despite the re-opening of the courthouse building, court sittings will not be reinstated.
Local Councillor Thomas Welby, is part of the Courthouse Restoration Project and says it will now be used for community purposes.
And we will have an extended feature on this new facility on FYI Galway from 5 this evening.
