Galway Bay fm newsroom – There’s relief in Cahermore this morning as flood water levels seem to have stabilised following the digging of a channel to the sea.
Cahermore, between Labane and Kinvara, is one of many areas in South Galway where a number of homes were flooded by unprecedented water levels.
The channel is almost 3 miles long and runs from Cahermore to the sea at Kinvara – and a number of homes under threat have now been granted respite as water levels appear to have levelled off.
The works were given the go-ahead by Galway County Council on Friday and involved identifying and opening choke points for the flow of water to Kinvara.
Fine Gael Deputy Ciaran Cannon says land-owners played a vital role in the emergency relief project.
Director of Services at Galway County Council Liam Gavin says the recent flooding is the worst he’s ever seen.
