Galway Bay fm newsroom – There is real fear across South Galway this New Year’s Eve as flood waters have now gone above 2009 levels, and are continuing to rise

Galway County Council says the days ahead for the region are not looking good – and flooding in the area may not be resolved for a number of weeks.

Additional soldiers and a Defense Forces helicopter have been deployed to assist Council Crews and the Civil Defence in bolstering flood defences.

Crews are working around the clock to hold the water back and more rain is forecast

At least 30 homes remain under threat from floodwaters, while up to 10 homes have already been overwhelmed by the rising water levels.

Local Cllr Michael Fahy, whose own house is located near rising flood waters told me the water levels are rising by the hour and their volume is terrifying.

County Council Director of Services Liam Gavin says the flooding may not subside for weeks and the Gort area in particular is under a great deal of pressure today.

Up to 10 houses are flooded.
