Galway Bay fm newsroom – The government is being asked to take urgent action as water levels in the Dunkellin River continue to rise rapidly.
Flood mitigation works have been proposed for the Dunkellin River and Aggard Stream, and a decision had been due on the project earlier this month.
However, that decision has been postponed by the OPW until the end of February.
Following Storm Desmond, the road through Craughwell village became impassible when the river burst its banks.
Gauges on the rivers Shannon, Suck, Clare and Dunkellin are all at critical levels today.
Loughrea area councillor Michael Moegie Maher is in Craughwell.
He says water levels are rising quickly, and will continue to rise in the coming days due to run-off from waterlogged lands along the river.
Councillor Maher says the government needs to urgently intervene to ensure the Dunkellin flood relief scheme goes ahead as soon as possible.
