Galway Bay fm newsroom – The National Parks and Wildlife service is being asked to intervene as flooding in South Galway continues to spiral out of control.

Flooding in the area could be greatly alleviated by the unblocking of swallow holes across the region.

That’s according to Councillor Joe Byrne, who says that South Galway is a soluble rock area in which water relies on a series of underground streams to reach the sea.

The Fine Gael Councillor says that many swallow holes are based in Special Areas of Conservation, which restrict the carrying out of remedial works.

He’s urging the National Parks and Wildlife Service to meet with local interest groups including the IFA to discuss the matter.

Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon is also calling on the Minister with reponsibility for the NPWS, Heather Humphreys, to visit the region.

Councillor Joe Byrne says clearing swallow holes could provide a solution to flooding in South Galway.
