Galway Bay fm newsroom – A significant number of homes across South Galway are this evening facing conditions worse than those experienced during extensive flooding in 2009.
Councillor Gerry Finnerty says that the whole of South Galway is now like ‘one big lake’ – and a number of areas that were unaffected by Storm Desmond are now already flooded.
He says that unlike the flooding experienced in South Galway in recent weeks and in 2009, the current situation is seeing floodwater spreading evenly across the region – from Craughwell to Kileeneen, and Gort to Loughrea.
The Fianna Fail Councillor says that the rising high winds and associated water swells are of serious concern to residents across the region.
He also says that accessability across the region is already a huge issue, with a significant number of local roads impassable.
Councillor Finnerty says that for a significant number of South Galway residents, it’s the worst conditions they’ve faced in 20 years.
