Rising flood waters in South Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Storm Frank, the sixth storm to hit Ireland this month, is expected to batter the west coast from tomorrow bringing heavy rainfall.

However, there will also be heavy rain today with a risk of flooding, as there is a Status Yellow rainfall warning in place until 6 this evening in Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick

Rainfall totals of 20 to 30 mm possible today with this warning with the highest amounts in mountainous areas.

There are fears heavy rainfall could lead to the evacuation of several homes in the Labane area.

Local county councillor Michael Fahy says residents have stacked sandbags outside their properties, but fear the rising water table will cause water to enter their homes despite their efforts.

The N18 remains closed today at Labane due to existing floods, and diversions are in place.

The county council is working in the Kilbeacanty area while caution is also urged due to rising flood waters in Ardrahan, Kilcolgan and the Dark Road

The army have been assisting the county council with flood relief in Gort over the last few days

NewsBreak understands that at least one house in Kiltartan may have to be evacuated today
