Galway Bay Fm newsroom-A young man from a well-known Loughrea family has died in a road crash in the early hours of today. (Sunday).
The man who was walking at the time died is a resident of Loughrea town and from a well-known family. He died following the incident on the Athenry Road on the edge of the town and not far from the the Loughrea Hotel and Spa.
Loughrea Gardai say the man who died was 26 and he was pronounced dead at scene. His body was taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe where a post mortem is to be arranged.
The male driver, 19 years, sole occupant of the car, was uninjured.
The Athenry-Loughrea Road on the outskirts of the town was closed for a time after the crash but reopened before midday.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who may have travelled the N66 Loughrea-Galway Road, through Loughrea Town between 1.30am and 5.30am this morning to contact Loughrea Garda Station on 091 842870, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
