County Council launches Irish Language scholarships scheme

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council is today launching two new Irish language scholarship scheme.

The programmes are being organised in honour of Pádraig Pearse and Eamonn Ceannt – two of the leaders of the 1916 Rising and signatories to the proclamation.

Both men had strong ties to County Galway.

The programmes are being run as part of the County Galway 1916-2016 Centenary Programme.

The Padraig Pearse scholarship is being run in recognition of Pearse’s link to Connemara.

Five scholarships will fund the attendance of qualifying second-level students at Gaeltacht Summer Colleges across the county.

The Eamonn Ceannt Scholarship scheme is being launched to acknowledge the Rising leader’d strong connection to Galway through his birthplace in Ballymoe.

Ceannt, a talented Uileann piper, had a very strong interest in the Irish language.

Two scholarships will be open to qualifying members of staff of Galway County Council to support their participation in intensive Irish language courses.
