Galway Bay fm newsroom – Nine people have died on Galway roads so far this year.

The figure has been released by the Garda Western Division, as it launches its 2015 Christmas Road Safety campaign today.

This month, Gardaí will be out in force conducting alcohol checkpoints, monitoring speed and ensuring people are wearing seatbelts and driving safely.

Motorists are also being urged to put away their mobile phones when driving.

In December last year, 237 people across Galway were caught using their phones while driving.

A further 136 people were caught speeding, while 45 people were detected drink-driving.

Regional Traffic Superintendent Noel Kelly says as we enter the Christmas months, motorists can expect increased Garda presence on the roads
